Latrice and I sat on our grassy hill, overlooking Western City. The sky above us was a fierce mix of giant gray clouds, huge white clouds, and light blue sky. It was rather warm but very windy. The large city stood before us, the building Sky High standing out from the rest of the buildings.
Latrice had improved nicely physically. Her body was filling out as I fed her, her hair thickened and lustered, erring more yellow than blonde, the bruises faded on her smoother and peachier skin, and her brown eyes cleared and brightened. The day after I had cleaned her hair, I had taken her shopping at the mall. She had seemed excited when I told her she could buy whatever she wanted and I would pay for it all, yet she had an air of reservation, too, unused to buying as much as she could, unused to having so many choices presented to her. It was a fun day at the mall, and at the end, Latrice had even bought something for me: a brown leather jacket with black jeans. She said I'd look cool in them. Pleasantly pleased, I had thanked her for her generosity.Over the course of a few more days, as autumn's colors deepened, as the moon filled out, as the winds blew colder and the air stiffer, I devoted my days to Latrice's journey of becoming who she really was. She seemed more eager to listen and learn now, she didn't balk as much to new things, and she smiled more, talked more. She told me she worked odd jobs to earn money, admitting she didn't make much and occasionally it left her spending nights on the streets; she also didn't go to school. She listened to my stories of heroic deeds, and I prompted her to tell me some of her tales. I cooked exotic foods for her to try at home, often under Reese's curious gaze, and then I would kindly let him try some, feeling a little bad that I was leaving him alone more and more as I used my time to teach or debate with Latrice on morals. I displayed some of my powers for her. She took me to her favorite shop, an accessory store, saying she could never buy anything here, but she loved to browse, and had been flummoxed when I bought her a little gift. All in all, I was proud of her progress.
She never spoke of her family, though, nor let me into her apartment. I kept that in mind.
Currently, we were basking in the wild, open, free hills where you felt like you could do anything with all that space and wilderness. The green seemed to stretch on into another world, but it did end where it grew and darkened to the forest. Just two days ago, we had explored the forest beyond the grassland, where the world grew shadowed and quieter, in a more mysterious, closed, dappled way. I was wearing that brown leather jacket with the black jeans, while Latrice was wearing an outfit of a pink crop-top with a loose light blue sweater and dark blue jeans."Why didn't you come yesterday?" Latrice asked, her brown eyes never leaving the city.
I crossed my arms. "My brother got injured in the leg. I wanted to stay home and make sure he was okay."
Reese didn't tell me how he had got the injury. He said it happened outside but wouldn't give any details. Ossei and I didn't take him to the doctors at all. Though he still limped, he showed signs of improvement. Ossei had wanted to take him, but I refused. I knew Reese had severe agoraphobia and that put me between a rock and a hard place. Should I force Reese to go and risk him panicking even though he should get his leg checked out, or do I listen to his needs and not pressure him? I remembered the time he freaked out when I had taken him for a longer walk, and ever since then he's stayed at home, afraid to lose control. I felt sorry for him. He was confined like an invalid, like one with a crutch, a wheelchair, a sick person abed.
