Chapter Eight : The Girl in the Fireplace

no idea if angel blades work on metal. but i couldn't find anything against it, so just go with it.

CLAUDIA STEPPED OUT BEHIND THE DOCTOR, MICKEY, AND ROSE, CLOSING THE TARDIS DOOR GENTLY BEHIND HER.

"It's a spaceship," Mickey whispered in awe, looking around in excitement. "Brilliant, I got a spaceship on my first go."

Claudia smiled over at him, moving away from him and Rose and taking in the sight for herself. They appeared to have landed on a big, open spaceship with lots of loose wiring, dim lights -- if any at all -- and what seemed like no crew or guests. It had tall ceilings and high columns with covered windows and tubing lining each wall.

She frowned, glancing over at the Doctor.

"It's kind of empty," she mulled, toying with the sleeve of her flannel, which used to be her fathers and fell quite loosely over her arms and shoulders. "Is that normal on spaceships?"

The Doctor narrowed his eyes, scratching his chin in thought. "No, not -- not particularly. Stay close," he added, giving her a meaningful side-glance, to which she nodded once in response.

"Looks kind of abandoned," Rose spoke Claudia's previous words. "Anyone on board?"

"Nah, nothing here," the Doctor shrugged her comment off. "Well, nothing dangerous." He thought for a second. "Well," he corrected, "not that dangerous."

"Pity," Claudia muttered, lifting a dusty wire. "I like a little danger."

The Doctor glanced at her, but his eyes fell on their quiet surroundings. "You know what?" He asked rhetorically. "I'll just have a quick scan," his voice lowered, "in case there's anything dangerous."

Claudia's lips turned up in the corner, half-smiling at the thought. "Here's hoping."

Rose moved past Mickey and Claudia, leaning up next to the Doctor. Claudia noticed Mickey's downcast expression and she nudged his arm, pointing to the wall.

"What do you think that tubing's for?"

He shrugged, thinking for a moment. "I dunno, maybe it helped with air conditioning."

Claudia nodded, taking his guess into consideration. "That's a good guess. Maybe an air filter of sorts?"

Mickey grinned. "That's so sick," he looked over at her and she matched his enthusiasm with a cheeky smile. "Can you imagine living that far in the future?"

Claudia shook her head. "Not a chance, I can barely use my cell phone."

Mickey laughed but before their conversation could continue, the lights turned on and the top of the ship opened up wide, metal grates to reveal the space above them.

"51st Century," the Doctor explained to Rose.

Claudia's mouth dropped a fraction as she looked above her, seeing the blue and purple hues of the sky above them.

"The Dagmar Cluster," the Doctor explained, "you're a long way from home, Mickey!"

"Dagmar," Claudia repeated quietly, absorbing the information. She wondered if Castiel had been there before. He'd shown knowledge of travelling through space and time, though didn't appear to make a habit of it, and wondered if he'd ever stood where she had.

"Two and a half galaxies," the Doctor concluded.

"Mickey Smith, meet the universe," Rose walked towards him, resting her hands on his shoulders.
