Coral Reefs: A Mermaid's Story

Chapter 1

{Lilly's POV}

I stretched out my limbs and yawned. I had a nice sleep the night prior and I'm ready to have some fun, but first I have to take a shower. I crawled out of my little cave and swam around the corner. Right infront of me was my favourite spot to hang out. There was a waterfall that's the perfect size for showering, and a big rock underneath that I can sit on. I swam up to the rock with a smile on my face. I used all of my upperbody strength to climb on top of the rock. Once I was situated I leaned my head back into the water and I immedietly relaxed. It's so hard to be tense when your under the cool splashes of water. I looked forward and heard voices. "Come on, let's go over here." a boy said. I heard rocks and shells crunch in the distance. I panicked and jumped off the rock, causing a huge splash. I stayed underwater just in case and watched as 2 teenage boys walked into the area I'm at. I opened my mouth in shock as the two boys wandered to the waterfall. I swam into a hidden, dark corner, and lifted my head above the water's surface. "Liam, don't do that!" one of the boy's yelled to the other as he stuck his hand in the water. The one who's apparently named Liam pulled his hand out of the water and started walking around. I looked to the left and saw a horrible sight; what looked like a Bull Shark. Liam turned around and, judging by his reaction, saw the shark. He tapped the other boy and started backing up. I took a really good look at the shark and saw that it was only a Spinner Shark. I went underwater and caught the shark's attention. It started heading towards me and I rubbed it's back. I continued stroking it's slimy skin while I lifted my head above the surface. But what I didn't realize, was that I was in the middle of the water. I turned towards the shore and the two boys were just staring at me. I looked down to make sure that my tail wasn't visible, and it wasn't. "Oh my.. are you crazy? Let that thing go!" the unknown boy yelled at me. "Oh relax, I know what I'm doing. Plus your acting as if it's a Great White." I smirked. "Well then what is it?!" he screamed back. "It's a Spinner Shark, they're practically harmless." I boasted. I was afraid to move, considering my tail might show. "Well why are you holding it? Where are you from?" he asked. My smile dropped and my face flushed. What was I supposed to say? I'm a mermaid, I live here? No. "I'm comforting it, ya know. So it won't bite your heads off." I giggled. "Oh please, and you still didn't answer the other question. Where do you live?" he repeated. "You don't need to know, land walker." I snorted. Woops. I just called him a land walker, didn't I? "What?" he asked. Luckily before I could mess things up any further Liam spoke up. "Do you think I could pet that?" he asked me. "Sure, as long as you can come over to where I am." I smiled. He smiled back and started walking into the water. Just then I realized he might feel my tail. Well too late now. He stood infront of me with fear in his eyes. "It's alright, just slowly rub his back." I tell him. He reached his hand out and slowly rubbed his back. He smiled at me and pulled his hand away. "So where are you from?" he asked. "I can't tell you." I said. He frowned at me and said "Why not?". "I'm sorry, I just can't. I've always lived alone, so there's no one I can trust." I replied. "I just want to know. Do you live around here?" he asked. "Yeah, I guess." I replied with a shrug. "Oh, do you wanna-"he started, but I cut him off. "Actually I have to go now, so you might wanna get away from this shark before I let him go." I chuckled. He blushed and backed out of the water. "Do you think we could meet again?" he asked once he was on shore. "No, I'm not allowed to talk to landwellers." and with that I turned and started swimming away. "What does that mean?" he shouted. "It means that mer people aren't supposed to associate themselves with you." I yelled back. I turned for one last glance and saw the look of confusion in his face. I turned back around and sunk underwater.
