EIRENE TYRELL WAS WELL ACCUSTOMED to wanting what she could not have. She was used to sealing her lips closed and wrapping her aching fingers tightly into fists — as though she could physically restrain her wanting. It was a tiring sort of pain, one she bore alone.
Or so she thought.
Arriving at court she needed only to glance at the Lady Alicent's sore spindly fingers to recognise the shared ache. It was strangely liberating, no longer being alone.
However the two had spent a lifetime with their fists clenched. Nails biting into their palms. Blood blooming at the first sign of otherness. The thought of unclenching their hands and holding their palms out to face each other — to face the world — was almost unfathomable.
And yet Eirene found her freedom in letting go.
But she did not realise that the hunger inside Alicent had eaten away at her insides. It could not be stopped. It devoured all it could peeling the flesh from her bones. Eating away at her very heart.
If she was not carful — Eirene too would be devoured.
