chapter two - road trip

"get in the car everyone! it's road trip time!!"

"i'm coming, i'm coming..."

"AHHH don't leave me behind!! i'm coming too!"

HERO starts the car as we all pile in. he drives, KEL sitting in the front with him. BASIL and i are comfortablely in the back with a good amount of space, and AUBREY sits in the middle, lonely, but she seems to be glad about it.

"so, are we all excited to go visit SUNNY...?"

BASIL looks out the window uncomfortabely. he had been quiet ever since HERO first brought up the idea to go visit him. it had been two years since SUNNY first moved away, and he never kept in touch with any of us, though KEL and HERO's mother often talked to his mother. they had been making plans for all of us to reunite with SUNNY for a while, but we could never find a good few days that worked until now. i laid my head on BASIL's shoulder, trying to be reassuring in a... subtle way? he looks down at me and i smile. he smiles back.

"of course i am! man, it really has been a long time," KEL responds, as enthusiastic as always.

"i mean... i could go without seeing him. but it'll be nice."

"i think it'll be great for all of us to reconnect with SUNNY!! and... how about you, BASIL? you were his best friend... and you haven't really talked to him since... well... you know. do you think it'll be nice to repair things?"

BASIL's obviously uncomfortable by even the mention of SUNNY, yet he keeps calm and tries to respond in a regular way.

"i'm not sure. a lot has happened. like AUBREY, i could go without seeing him. but... i guess it could be nice," he states, still looking out the window.

"i know it's been rough. everything that's happened in the past 6 years. but, we are all okay, right?"

"yeah, everyone but MARI..." BASIL mumbles.

"it'll be good for all of us to reconnect with SUNNY after everything that happened. i heard he's actually talking now, and he's been doing much better. but still... he needs us after everything thats happened-"

"he needs us? where was he when i needed him?!" BASIL snaps.

HERO sighs. "alright... enough about SUNNY. let's just save it for when we get there and talk about something else for now! so..."

i tune out the conversation, and look up at BASIL. he still stares outside at the passing trees. i feel so bad for him... i sigh. i lay my head back on his shoulder, and find his hand to hold, hoping that me being here with him is enough to make him feel like he's not alone, just for the time being... until i can talk to him about SUNNY.

"we're hereee!!" HERO says, putting the car in park.

"finally!! man, that was a long drive... my legs hurt! nice to get out and walk again."

"we stopped at like 4 different gas stations, KEL..."

"but... that was so long ago..."

BASIL's been silent the entire car ride, and continues to stay silent as everyone gets out of the car. I begin to step out and pull on his sweater to convince him to get out too.

"wow... november, and it's still not that cold here!! ARIZONA weather is much different from WASHINGTON... anyways! this is our hotel, everyone. what do you think? 5-starssss!!"

"wow, HERO!! this place is beautiful. you're really putting your doctor paycheck to good use, aren't you?"

"sure am! i want the best for you all. come on, let's go check in! we've got dinner with SUNNY at 6."
