TW: symptoms of depression, burns, swearing, mentioned (not present) symptoms of an eating disorder
__________
George did his best to dwell in his anger that he hadn't been able to stay in the light any longer, but even he had to admit progress was progress. Even if the burns really did hurt.
He eventually decided he didn't want to waste all of his time, so he brings himself back into reality and checks on Dream. Unfortunately, he finds him already asleep.
George sighs, but not without any fondness behind it. He didn't want to wake him up. George knew Dream hadn't been sleeping well lately, and it was taking a toll on him. Maybe there was more to it than that, but George decided to let him sleep.
Instead of watching a movie or talking with Dream, he grabs his phone and scrolls through it. Dream always let George use his phone, whether he asked or not. Especially because he didn't have one himself.
He scrolled through Twitter, downloaded an ungodly amount of games, and took a picture of Dream's face up close. He was about to put the phone back, when it buzzed. He glanced at the screen. The contact didn't have a name, just a heart emoticon. He clicked on it without thinking.

hey 💕
are you still awake?
it's fine if not, i'll talk to you tomorrow babe
George stared at the phone. "Does he have a girlfriend?" he muttered.
It didn't matter, though. Dream had dated before, and George hadn't cared. His only question was, Why didn't he tell me?
George glanced at Dream, who was sleeping peacefully, and shoved aside the twisted feeling in his stomach. He put the phone back carefully, and stood in the room not knowing what to do in the silence.
He picked a book off the self that was mounted on the wall. It was a new book Dream had gotten him. George read almost every single book in the house, so Dream started to buy him more.
Dream's mom, Puffy (he wasn't sure about her real name), had become suspicious at one point, since Dream didn't seem to actually be reading the books, so now whenever George finished a book he recalled the details to Dream.
After awhile, Dream was no longer questioned about the books. Both of them knew that, but it became a little tradition and George loved that Dream was always there to listen. At least, he usually was. Lately he'd just been tired and sort of out of it. George had called him depressed as a joke, but he was really starting to worry for his best friend.
"Mmhi George. D'you you want me to get up so we can hang out?" Dream asked sleepily, eyes barely open.
George almost jumped in surprise. He stared at his friend for a moment. Of course he wanted to say yes, but he looked exhausted. "No, no. You need sleep," he said with a soft smile to let him know it wasn't a problem.
"Okay... Good night," he mumbled, eyes falling closed again. "M'love you."
"Uh— Yeah, good night."
George let himself linger on the last words for just a second longer. That's all. Because he knew they didn't mean anything, and Dream was just very sleep deprived.
