XI: Lexi and Marie
Lexi
For about the hundredth time since Sunday, Lexi glanced over at her phone. Still no notifications.
Stop it. You need to get this done so you can get paid and enjoy your break.
Lexi closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, centering herself, then went back to typing. She was mostly done--just proofreading before she sent off the copy to her client. Editing, unfortunately--especially line-editing--was relatively boring and prone to putting her into a distractible state.
She glanced at her phone again, then sighed. Still nothing.
I shouldn't be expecting anything, should I? She texted me when she was at the airport and when she landed and was waiting for her luggage.
She and Marie had texted a bit more often last week...had sleeping with her changed that?
Lexi sighed, putting her head in her hands, I definitely shouldn't have done that.
Not yet, at least. That night--and the morning after--had been incredible. Probably the best night Lexi could remember having in years. That alone told her she shouldn't have done it yet. Things were still too new. There was too much she didn't know about Marie. Most of what she did know so far seemed promising, but Lexi had definitely picked up on some issues with the blonde, particularly concerning her ex and relationships in general.
I just hope that night doesn't come back to bite me.
Lexi shook her head, letting out a sigh, then focused on her screen.
Just twenty more minutes and I should be done. I can do that.
Lexi managed to examine two more lines before she heard a knock. She blinked, turning around in her chair. Anna had gone home for break yesterday.
Frowning, Lexi rose from her chair and walked out into her apartment's main room to the front door. She looked through the peephole and—
No way!
Lexi flung open the door and yelped when her sister jumped onto her with a hug and a gleeful shriek before Lexi could even get two words out. Lexi stumbled back but managed to hold on to her sister. She had to put her down, however, as both of them started laughing.
"What are you doing here?" Lexi asked, wrapping her arms around Helen in a tight, much-needed hug, "Your flight wasn't supposed to land for another hour! How did you get into the building without me?"
Helen laughed, "My flight got delayed even though I got to JFK early, so I just took the train and got some work done. And I just slipped in with a few other people downstairs when I got here--thought I would surprise you."
Lexi's sister pulled back, grinning as she grabbed her luggage from the hall and dragged it inside. Once she closed the door behind her, Helen stood up and eyed Lexi.
Lexi raised an eyebrow, "What?"
"You need to get dressed, girl, we're going out tonight!"
Lexi blinked, "It's five."
"I know how long you take to get ready."
Lexi stuck her tongue out, making her sister laugh.
"I don't take that long."
Helen arched an eyebrow, hands on hips.
Lexi sighed, "Helen, you've gotta be exhausted, and I'm still finishing up some of my freelance work."
