Still somewhat taken aback by the inn keeper's stealth, Aether follows the man back upstairs. The sound of the wind and early droplets of rain grew louder as they made their way past the entrance the blonde had taken. He quietly shushed a grumbling Paimon as he gently lulled her back to drooling against his scarf.
The innkeeper smiled in a reticent manner at the heart warming display of affection, regardless he outwardly acted impassive as he finally came to a stop. With practiced movements Huai'an unlocks the door and opens it before gesturing for the two to enter.
The blonde smiles as he thanks the man, collecting his room key before slipping into the room. His first order of business was to put his snoring companion down, tenderly coaxing her grabby hands off his clothes.
There are faint sounds of discontentment at the loss before, once again, Aether's voice is whispering pleasantries that swiftly quelled any remaining sleepy protest.
Catching a glimpse of his adventurer notebook he pulls it from the pixies scarf and places it on the bedside table. A deep rumble is felt within the blonde's chest as the thunder begins, Aether silently counting before the imminent clap of lightning is heard.
With one final pat against white locks the outlander begins to remove his garments, a tired yawn escaping as tears well in his eyes. He doesn't bother to wipe them away as he prepares for bed.
He listens to the sound of rain hammering against the window, the periodic sound of thunder before the inevitable jolt of lighting that would sometimes hurt his ears with how close it would strike. The scent of wet wood and foliage that mixed with the warm smell of incense that seemed to chase away the other smells the rest of the inn harbored.
Aether falls into a restless slumber, gently lulled by the static of rain and the faint rise and fall of his trusted companions stomach.
He wakes with a sudden jolt that he isn't sure actually happened or not, his heart hammering in his chest, ears ringing and eyes full of tears that stream down the side of his face and into his hairline. Once he realizes where he is he instead focuses on taking steadying breaths as he closes his eyes, breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth. They start out shaky before eventually evening out.
As his heart rate evens he opens his eyes and tries to point out certain objects as he slowly calms down, loosening the death grip he held on the comforter he pushes himself up. Timidly wiping away his tears against the flowy sleeves of his blouse as he tries not to think about the dream he had.
More so the depressing hollowness it had left in his chest.
It was a twisted version of a memory, when he had first reunited with Lumine during that mission with Dainsleif. But instead of that cold unnoticing gaze she had looked at him with, it was instead a mirror of the same joy and disbelief he had upon seeing her for the first time in years.
Instead of acknowledging Dainsleif she ran to him and they embraced with the warmth Aether had forgotten how much he desperately missed during their time apart. His heart felt as though it would burst from the immeasurable relief and joy of finally reuniting with his long lost kin.
Then it all fell away.
It's a similar dream to many he's dealt with since starting this seemingly endless adventure, going from finding his sister and leaving to instead trying to understand why she was acting the way she is.
He'd laugh at the mere fact that he had gotten so excited during a dream that it had woken him up if he knew that he wouldn't just end up breaking down into anguished sobs.
Who would've thought that the image of his sister turning her back on him after looking past him as if he was nothing but a bothersome speck would've left a lasting imprint on Aether's psyche. Not Aether, that's for sure.
