The three friends stood there. In silence. They all stared at the car which was quickly disappearing into the horizon, hoping that it would magically come back. But how could it return? Isadora and Duncan were gone.
Y/N couldn't see. Her normally 20/20 vision was blinded by the amount of anger building up inside her, she was sure that she'd explode. She clenched her fists. How could he? How could he just take away her friends like that? All the memories that she had with Isadora and Duncan flooded her mind. The time when it had started to rain, but her and the Quagmire triplets didn't care, they ran around and laughed and danced. The time when they pranked Carmelita by pouring melted chocolate (it wasn't hot, don't worry) into her tap dancing shoes and watching her from afar as she looked around in fury, threatening whoever did that to her. She and her friends had laughed so much they couldn't breathe. Y/N looked back at those memories with a melancholy smile. She was shaken out of this trip on memory lane when Klaus and Violet placed a hand on both of her shoulders, silently comforting her. It was a simple gesture, but it meant so much.
"Let's not lose hope. We can get them back" Y/N said as she gave a reassuring smile to both of her friends.
They returned the smile and gave a determined nod.
They all turned their heads to where the sound of fast footsteps was emitting from.
"My, my, Baudelaires, turns out running laps night after night paid off didn't it?" Mr. Poe said.
"I guess you could say that," Violet replied, before speaking again, in an urgent tone. "Mr. Poe we must go after Count Olaf at once, he's taken the Quagmire triplets."
"Weren't they twins? I thought one of them died in a fire. Anyways, you let the authorities worried about that, Baudelaires. I, on the other hand, have to take you to your next guardian." Mr. Poe replied.
"They're triplets and we can't wait for the authorities, who knows where they'll be by then?" Klaus said frustratedly.
Y/N watched the exchange between the Baudelaires and their banker. She wondered how they'd tolerated him for all these weeks.
"I assure you Baudelaires, you can trust the justice system. Now hurry along and get in my car, your new guardians are eager to meet you. They said that you're 'in'. Whatever that means."
First, who could trust the justice system? Second, he was taking the Baudelaires?
"But Mr. Poe-" Violet began to protest.
"No, let's go." Mr. Poe said sternly before coughing into his handkerchief.
The Baudelaires let out a reluctant nod and turned to Y/N. By this time, Sunny had also caught up with them by taking tiny but quick steps.
"This isn't goodbye. We'll meet again. We can't thank you enough for what a great friend you've been." Violet whispered before hugging her.
"The next time we meet I'll make you a chocolate cake." Sunny babbled. Y/N was sure that she'd sob.
The last was Klaus. Violet and Sunny left to give them some privacy.
"Violet was right you know, this isn't goodbye," Klaus said, although it was sounding more like he was trying to convince himself.
"Yes, we'll see each other again," Y/N said as she took a hold of Klaus's hand and gave it an assuring squeeze. They smiled at each other.
Y/N and Klaus walked to Mr. Poe's car, where Violet and Sunny had gone.
All four friends shared sad smiles and waves, before the car took off and travelled farther and farther away, until it was just a speck on the road.
Y/N turned around, and immediately went to the library. There had to be some books about finding missing persons, right?
