I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock reverberating in my room. On checking the time, I discovered that it was 5:30am. After getting dressed I called a cab and made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. Then I walked to Zoe’s room and knocked on the door. When she didn’t reply, I thought I’d call her later. I dragged my suitcase down to the pavement and waited for the cab for ten minutes. When the cab came, I directed him where to go. After half an hour I reached the airport. 6:45am. Perfect.

When I got down from the cab, I saw Larry waiting for me and I groaned internally. What was he doing here?

“What are you doing here, Larry?” I asked.

“I came to bid my favourite journalist goodbye,” he said, cheerily.

“Yeah, right,” I scoffed. He led me to the private jet. As I saw it only one thought entered my mind: Wow! The plane was amazing! I wondered what it would be like from inside. None of the members or the crew was standing outside. I guessed that they must be seated already. Larry climbed the steps of the airplane. Then it was my turn. On my left was the cockpit and on my right were an aisle and then a curtain. There was an air hostess standing in front of us. She requested Larry to leave the plane and led me down the aisle. Larry left, giving me a thumbs up sign. I pulled the curtain aside and saw six people on the other side. All of them left what they were doing and stared at me. I became very self conscious and fiddled with my fingers.

“Hi! I’m Kat Demming,” I introduced myself,” I’m a journalist from Royalty and I’ll be with you guys on your tour for an article I’m writing.”

There were two huge sofas on both the sides of the plane and a bar on one end. I had googled the band the day before so I knew what the band members looked like. I didn’t know who the rest of the three people were though. Kyra Jones, who had blue hair with red highlights, was on one of the sofas, doing something with her laptop. Tyler Banks, the other guitarist who had shaggy blond hair, was lying down on the sofa beside her, eating an apple. He was very cute and reminded me of a small kid.

“Hi!” He said. “I’m Tyler, I play the guitar. Nice to meet you. You’re hotter than I thought you would be.”

“Ty! You’re not supposed to greet people like that!” Kyra scolded, smiling. She was really very pretty despite the blue and red hair.

“Sorry about his behaviour.” She apologised to me. “He burnt the book on manners Brendan, our manager gave him.”

Ugh. Brendan.

I looked around. Other than the four of them, there were two other people there, none of whom matched my mental picture of the Jerk; mainly because one of them was a sweet looking girl of about 21 or 22 and the other was a HUGE man dressed in black with muscles that could seriously rival Arnold Schwarzenegger’s.

“Where is he? Isn’t he supposed to travel with you?” I asked.

“Travel with US, you mean. For the next five months, you’re a part of us, too, so don’t let me hear all this ‘you’ and ‘I’ bullshit.”Kyle Saunders smiled at me.

Wow! Their attitudes were completely different from there asshole-of-a manager’s.

“Thank you! I was feeling like a major pile-on, but that really made me feel better.”

“Don’t mention it. Let me introduce you to everyone. That was Tyler, who was hitting on you; that’s Kyra – they’re our guitarists.” They both flashed their toothpaste-commercial white teeth at me. “Ryan, our drummer, is there, asleep on the couch, over there.” A zombie like face rose, smiled a surprisingly docile smile at me, and went back to sleep. “And that’s Tess Swan, she does our hair and makeup, and is also are costume in-charge. And that’s Dan, our brilliant bodyguard. Oh, I’m Kyle, by the way. I sing. ”

I couldn’t believe how normal they were. Musicians were usually so moody and bizarre, but not them.

A while later, I was busy talking to Kyra. She told me all about them. Apparently, they knew each other since their teens. ‘Shades of Gray’ had started out as a band that used to practice in Kyle’s dad’s garage, and now was internationally famous. What an amazing success story!

Unintentionally, I yawned.

“Sorry, am I boring you?” Kyra asked.

“No, not at all . I’m just not really a morning person,” I told her. Kyra laughed while I continued, “I think I’ll just freshen up a bit in the washroom.”

“Yeah, sure. Go down the aisle and take a left,” Kyra gave me the directions.

I walked to the washroom and just as I was about to turn the handle, the door opened and Kyle walked out of it. I noticed him properly for the first time. He had dark blond hair and captivating gray eyes. My face was two inches from his chest. I sucked in my breath and looked down.  He moved out of my way and held the door open for me. I stepped inside and looked around, fascinated. The washroom was huge compared to the ones in the public airplanes.

I splashed my face with cold water. I hoped that I didn’t have to get up that early every day. I wiped my face with a tissue and looked around the restroom. Just then, something silver and black, under the sink, caught my eye. It was a stereo. That was weird. I pressed the play button and “My first kiss” by Kesha started blaring out of the speakers. I sort of liked the song so I started singing and doing my crazy dance.

My first kiss went a little like this

Muah and twist

Muah muah and twist

I was completely lost in my own world so didn’t notice anyone come in. When the song got over, I heard someone cough. On looking up, I saw a man, around my age, wearing a perfectly tailored and neatly ironed suit. He was tapping his foot and had an annoyed expression pasted on his face.I hadn't seen him before, when I had got onto the plane. Who was he?

“Hello.”
