The peace didn't last for long. Deathly silence crept into the campsite, the crackling of the fire even seeming to dampen. A horse neighed outside and alerted the resting girl. Melanie rose to her feet at the same time as Albedo. The man held his hand out behind him as a warning.

The alchemist sent the same gesture to Sucrose before he walked out of Melanie's sight. A familiar voice echoed into the surrounding enclosure. Following a dry laugh, none other than the Calvary Captain entered.

Melanie straightened her posture, raising her chin high. Her blue eyes turned icy cold in defiance. She knew why Kaeya was here, but doubts arose in her head. Wasn't it too soon? It was only her second day with Albedo.

"Ah, I see the rumors are true," the Captain said. His eye danced with mischief and amusement, but something more sinister lurked behind the purity. He looked her up and down, humming softly to himself. "So you are walking free... won't you look at that. May I ask you a few questions?"

Albedo grimaced from behind Kaeya. He seemed uneasy, almost panicked by their current predicament. "You weren't supposed to come for another three days, Kaeya," he said. "Why the sudden appearance?"

The cryo user turned away from Melanie and cocked his head to the side. "Jean asked me to drop in whenever I felt it was necessary. I must say, I thought the living arrangements would be different! You surprise me, Albedo."

"She's not a prisoner when she's with me. Melanie is a special case, and I wish more faith was put into me." Albedo walked towards her, his hand finding hers.

Something flickered in Kaeya's gaze and he shook his head, chuckling to himself. He adjusted his blue ponytail and muttered a few words. With that, he turned away from both of them. "Let's talk outside. I want to know your intentions here."

The Chalk Prince nodded in response, following Kaeya back outside. Sucrose ran over to Melanie's side, whimpering softly. She tugged on her sleeve and pulled Melanie into a squat on the ground. Both girls peeked from behind a corner at the two Knights curiously.

"Is it serious?" Melanie asked quietly.

Sucrose answered hesitantly. "I-I'm not sure. I spoke with the Captain on my way over here, but I never expected him to follow. Oh my, could this be my fault?!"

Melanie turned to look at her, sympathy showing in her blue orbs. "Of course not. Kaeya's being an ass, as usual. We're probably getting worked up over nothing."

Sudden shouting erupted from Kaeya. Sucrose flinched harshly, backing away from her hiding spot to shrink into the shadows. Melanie strained her ears to pinpoint the conversation, immediately cringing. Tears began to well in her eyes when Albedo joined in.

"She could have killed the Honorary Knight! Do you know what that would mean for us? Waiting for her to convert herself is pointless, and you know it, Albedo! You should never have proposed to remove her from her cell," Kaeya hissed.
