I woke up to complete darkness. I guess I should be getting used to this absence of light. Despite the fact of not seeing anything, my other senses were fully functioning. Arms tied above me to the wall causing me to hang above a puddle of what must be water. I try to slow my breathing, and observe more of my surroundings...The room I'm in is big and the walls are stone, if I stretch down far enough, my toes can touch the puddle of water below me. In the distance, low moans and screams of agony ring down the halls outside. And the smell. It smells like hands after they've handled too much coins or skin after it's worn cheap, metal jewelry.
This must be the dungeons.
The door opens up, shining light into the room. There's a bed on the wall opposite of me and the puddle of water runs along the entire wall I'm chained to. I guess this is my new room.
The person that opened the door walks into the room and stops right before the tiny ocean of water I'm hanging over. They stare at me, the look in their eyes is soft, not sinister like Thanos.
"Hello, Elise, my name is Quavin and I will be your caretaker while you stay in the dungeons." He says while slowly moving into the water and towards me.
"Wow, Thanos throws me in the the dungeons but gives me a caretaker?" I remark. How nice of him.
"Well, I'm just here to make sure you get up in time for school, give you your food, and get you back here after school," he replies. Now he's next to me unlocking the chains around my wrists and letting me down from the wall.
While he does this, I take time to observe him. He's wearing a black cloak that covers his body and his skin is the color of an orange sunset. His iris is completely black with a green ring around them. Not only does he have no hair on his head but his entire body appears hairless.
It feels good to be free from the wall, my arms are sore and my shoulders feel like they've been torn from their sockets many times.
As he lets me down, I gauge his height. He's not much taller than me, maybe 5'10''. I am, however, a tall 10 year old. Then I remember what he told me about going to school.
"Wait, I have to go to school? Not only that, I have to stay here after school!?" I ask, astonished.
"Yes, miss. Since you refuse to conform, you must stay in the dungeons and your education must be continued. Thanos believes that you will break and if you do...he will need an intelligent warrior".
"Well, he'll be waiting for a long time. I'm stronger than you think, you know," I reply, rubbing at my sore shoulder.
"I hope you are Miss, I hope you are. You need to rest, you have school in the morning," he says as he walks towards the door.
"Quavin, wait!" I yell towards his receding figure.
"Yes?" He stops and faces me.
"Why do you hope that I'm strong?" I ask, confused as to why he would support me.
"You are not the only prisoner here, Miss Elise," he whispers as he looks at me.
Not giving me enough time to reply, he walks out the door. I hear the locks on the other side of the door bolt shut and I head towards my bed in the darkness.
I lie there for what seems like hours, awake and alert. I try to tell myself that I can't sleep because my arms hurt. I tell myself this is a dream. However, I know this is real and I know that I'll never see my parents again and I know that they will never see me again. So I let myself cry. I cry until my shoulders burn from my sobs, until I no longer know who I am. I let myself cry.
