Is there any way to handle the pain you're facing? Can you ever escape it?
With God's help, the answer is yes. When thoughts of hurting yourself or giving up completely start flooding your mind, choose to reject the lies and focus instead on God's promises to you. The Bible tells us that God will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear and that He will always provide a way out so that you can endure it. With the power of Christ, you can conquer the darkness trying to bring you down.
If you've been wrestling with suicidal thoughts or are considering harming yourself to release some of the pain, commit now to create an action plan for when you feel tempted to make a destructive decision. Remove anything from your environment that you could use to harm yourself, have numbers saved in your phone of people you can call and talk to, and start memorizing Scripture that will help you in the battle.
One great verse to memorize is Philippians 4:8, which tells us to focus our thoughts on the true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy things in our lives. Just a few verses later, in Philippians 4:13, we learn that we can do all these things through Christ who gives us strength. When you focus your attention on seeking God and standing firm in His strength, you can claim victory over anything life throws your way.
Remember, when you feel weak, God is infinitely strong. When you don't have the strength or desire to go on anymore, call out to Him and He'll bring you freedom. You can overcome this darkness!
Take a moment now to pray this to God: Jesus, thank You for promising me that I'll never face a temptation that's too much for me to handle. You'll always provide a way out and strengthen me, even during my weakest moments. Help me focus my thoughts on Your promises, instead of on the lies telling me it would be easier to just give up. I declare today that with Your help, I am a conqueror and overcomer. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 ASV
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
- Philippians 4:8 ASV
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
- Philippians 4:13
