My eyes widened. Mr. Davenport wasn't actually their father? "What do you mean you're not our father", Chase asked. I stood up quickly, intrigued. "Yeah, he's their father", I said. Douglas looked at me telling me to shut up. I shrunk back down.
"No, that's what he's been telling you", he replied. I gritted my teeth in anger. "Well, I don't know who you are but you're going down", Adam threatened. He was about to run at the older man, but he hit a button on his remote, making them teleport into the cage.
"No!" I yelled. I thought he was going to blow them up!
"You mastered short-range teleportation before I did? I've been working on that for years!" Donald complained. Douglas smiled. "I know. I'm awesome", he gloated.
"You're still going down", Adam yelled. He lunged forward, but stopped once it didn't work. I looked at him quizzically. "My super strength. It's gone." Bree tried to run forward, testing her speed. "So is my speed."
Chase thought for a moment. "I've got nothing." My powers had stopped working long ago, I hated being so useless.
"That's because I designed these lasers to block the signals from your bionic chips. That's right. Daddy gave you toys, but he can also take them away." Douglas said chuckling. I was in way over my head, there was no way I could get out of this.
I didn't even know what I thought about Marcus anymore. He was still charming and handsome. But now, he was evil. It was all a lot to process in a few minutes. I sat in the back of the cell, and put my knees up to my chest.
I felt like crying. "Are you okay Zea", Bree asked. I looked up and there she was, kneeling in front of me in her cell. I nodded wiping any stray tears. "We're going to get out of here", she reassured. I nodded, this time more confidently.
Douglas stood in front of their cage with Marcus. I could see him looking at me sympathetically, trying not to catch his dad's eyes. "Well, Marcus. We finally captured them. Actually, I captured them. Me, me, me, me, me", Douglas gloated.
"You've got one of those too, huh?" Chase asked.
"You have no idea", Marcus complained, balling his fists. Douglas snapped his fingers telling him to come along. He followed, groaning. "Mr. Davenport, why did that guy say that he was our father?" I looked at Chase. He had hurt on his face.
"Because, technically, he is your father. And my brother", Donald replied. That seemed likely, them being related. They acted like brothers, and they were. "What?"
"How is that even possible?" Chase asked.
"Wait, so does this mean Chase is also my father?" Adam asked, dumbfounded. I rolled my eyes. Sometimes he can be a little dumb.
"Years ago, Douglas and I started Davenport Industries together. It was great, we had a cute little lab. You know, not as good as the big lab I have now, but then we didn't nearly have as much money--", he said.
"Get to the point", Bree interrupted. Thank goodness she did. I didn't know if I could listen to him anymore. "Right. We developed bionics so that robots could do the jobs that were too dangerous for people. But then, Douglas went behind my back and implanted them into genetically engineered humans", he explained.
"You mean us?"
I scoffed. "No, Adam. The Green Bay Packers." Everyone looked at me, forgetting I was there. I looked back down to the floor in embarrassment. "Your bionic chips were never designed to be interfaced with the human nervous system", Mr. Davenport said.
"So that's why we glitch", Chase sighed.
"Oh. And all these years, I thought it was just 'cause you're a terrible scientist", Adam said shrugging. Donald sighed. "Douglas also hid all kinds of secret codes in your chips. That's why you have all these mysterious new abilities popping up out of nowhere." Made sense.
"So, if your brother created us, how did we end up with you?" Bree asked.
"He wanted to make you into cyber-soldiers of mass destruction. But I knew if I raised you in a safe environment, I could train you to be bionic heroes. So I built the lab and I hid you there", Donald finished. I stayed squished in the corner, not saying a word.
"Wow. So everything we've ever known about ourselves, about you, it's all been...", Chase said.
"One big lie", Bree finished for him. There was a moment of silence. "Wow. This changes everything." Adam said. He gasped. "Oh! Am I Jewish?" I mentally facepalmed.
"Please tell me there's another unexpected twist where I find out I'm not related to him", Bree complained.
"Oi, this one with the futzing and the complaining." I rolled my eyes at Adam's antics.
"Look, I wanted to tell you guys, but I figured the less you knew, the safer you'd be", Donald apologized.
"But we trusted you. I mean, if you were lying about this, then who knows what else you were lying about." Chase said. Adam pulled Donalds hair roughly. "Ow! What are you doing?"
"He's not lying about the hair, just looks fake."
