"Oh ya, Grandmother wants to talk to you. It's about her line dancing competition next week Friday." Mother and father said goodbye to me and I telephoned grandmother.
" Hi Grandma! How are you? Hope you are well prepared for your competition!" We chatted for a while until Grandma announced that she had to prepare lunch. "Well, all the best next week. Break a leg!" I chuckled as I offered the idiom to her. Instead of the cheery goodbye I usually got from her, I was met with a momentary silence.
"Oh yes...goodbye Hammy..." She eventually replied slowly. I put down the receiver and went to watch 'Boxpants rule', an all time favourite cartoon show, on the television. (By the way, I made the cartoon show up. It is not real)
However, ten minutes later, there was another phone call. It was mother and she sounded livid. "Hammy, how could you say such a horrible thing!"she lambasted at me. Dumbfounded, I muttered a incoherent apology before she continued her tirade"Grandma Hesley called me to say that you were rude to her. She said you wanted her to get injured!"
Upon hearing that, I tried hard not to laugh. I told mother that grandma must have misunderstood me when I said 'break a leg'. "Still, she is very upset. I want you to call her now and clear up the misunderstanding.
Scratching my arm, as I always do when I am ashamed, I went to the telephone and called grandma again. She greeted me in a subdued voice and a few sniffs. Not wanting to prolong the misunderstanding any longer, I launched into an apology and explanation about the idiom I used. As understanding had dawned upon her, grandma broke into peals of laughter.
"Thank you for the well wishes, Hammy. I am back to my old self now." She chuckled.
Our call ended on a high note and I sat down in relief. I sat back and enjoyed Boxpants Rule, eating Mac and cheese as lunch.
So, this chapter is longer than the first, which is, I guess, a good thing. Hope u vote and share the story!
