Then he breaks the silence.

"Then call him. If you truly care about any of us, you'll call him." He couldn't mean Sully right?

"Who? Sullivan? He doesn't need to know the details."

"Bloody hell. Madelaine, call Nik and Lijah."

"And wake the beast? I think not. Time is of the essence, Kol."

"And if you die after bringing them back... then what? What does that prove?"

I went to answer before Kol adds, "Nothing. It brings us nowhere closer to finding our kids. Our blood. This is a blood war and I know you're all for chaos and strife, but think about them."

"I am!"

"By doing this, you are putting them more at risk. What happens to them if the only parent they've ever known dies? And your coven? You don't get to play god again, Maddelena."

Without thinking, I eliminate the space between us and cup his face. Beautiful, chocolate morsels that softened as the minutes danced away from us. He has his eyes. Our son's eyes. "Kol..."

"Mads..."

"I don't think I'll ever love someone the way I love you. No matter how hard I try, no one will ever compare to you. So I am asking you one last time...stand with me. Let me do this. Let's bring them home." I kissed his cheek as the torrents of grief split his face. He hugs me tighter as if he was afraid of losing me before kissing my temple. He nods.

"Davina Claire, how exactly will this work darling?"

I swiveled myself in his arms as I faced Davina. "I should know the facts."

"But Kol is right. You should call them."

I slipped away from Davina and Kol and went to a room a few doors down.

Nik?

Maddelena? What is the meaning behind this call? Mockery? Tomfoolery? Pleasure? Business?

Nik, in order to find them...I must remember why I did any of this in the first place.

Lainey, it's Lijah. You cannot be serious. We just got you back and now you want to run to the hills for an answer?

I'm doing a deep nose dive into that one memory. You have a red door. I have a single memory.

Does my little brother approve?

Yes.

Don't die, little lion.

The line disconnected as quickly as it began. I just hope it's all worth it. After all this time, my kids will understand why I did things. "So, what exactly are we going to be doing?"

"This won't be a walk in the park. You'll be reliving your last day or so being human. Right up to the moment you become a vampire. You'll be in full control of the memory as I guide you further into your subconscious memory. But Maddelena, you will not be able to change it. Yes, you will be able to feel and experience everything as you did when it first happened. You can change the future, but you cannot touch the past. This is to figure out exactly what you're protecting. Do you understand?"

Kol blurts out, "I don't even understand."

I nod my head with, "Do the spell."

I lay on the bed as we lit the brown candles that lined the circle. We burned sage to ward off an evil that may be lurking in the shadows. She takes the dagger and slices my hand over the spell she had written. Raising her hands as the flames around us grew in power, she began the spell. Cum sanguine fit sacrificium. Cum potestate, fit electio. Ignem, Terram, Ventus, et Aquas, per umbras ejiciam. Ab interioribus daemonibus me defende. Dirige me ad responsiones meas.
