I woke up the next morning in a lot of pain, though that was to be expected since our time last night. I got up despite my body's protests and made myself a grilled cheese with the provided items in the hotel. Sephiroth woke up, and I saw the panic in his eyes. He must not sleep beside someone all night usually. I went up to him and hugged him, reassuring him that everything was fine. I wonder how he felt most days, when he was with me. He certainly always made me happy. He still would, If he ever visited anymore. "Darling, what would you like to do, today? We're still on vacation, after all," Sephiroth reminded me. "Your choice, you brought me here, after all!" His gasp of surprise when I asked hurt me, and I was almost afraid to interpret it as no one had really asked for him input. "I don't know." He muttered, hoping I'd just pick something. "Alright, how about the Shinra Headquarters Tour?" I smiled softly at him, hoping he'd come along. It was not meant to be, though. "I-I can't be there. But I'll watch you," he smiled his cunning smile at me and I reluctantly agreed. I've been wanting to do the tour for a very long while, anyways. I got dressed in a red skintight dress, pulled my hair half up/brushed out, and did a little bit of makeup. I bid farewell to Sephiroth and escaped the hotel.
I walked to the Headquarters of the most successful electric company in the world, yet it's only spread to one city. I walked in to the large building and bought an entry pass. The lady smiled at me as I walked by. I went into one of the first rooms, it was complicated, with lots of twists and turns. I was gawking and eyeing everything it had to offer and teach me. Everyone gradually left the room, leaving me alone. I felt a hand on my shoulder, I turned around to find Sephiroth, smirking at me again. He grabbed my hand, forcefully holding it. "I'll visit whenever I can, my little Enigma. But I'll be by your side regardless." I nodded as he softly kissed me. Suddenly, I heard rustling coming from outside, voices as well. Panicked voices. An older man came in, and I realized Sephiroth was gone. I turned to look at the man, he had a white lab coat on, and a black button up shirt. He had long hair that was pulled into a ponytail. He also had round glasses and a permanent frown. He seemed to have lots of wrinkles, as well. "Professor Hojo..." I muttered, recognizing him from the holograms. He was the main company scientist, in charge of all experiments. He was pretty serious and only cared about science from what I understood from his hologram message. He heard me and looked in my direction. "Ah, would you mind getting out? I have to find Sephiroth and Jenova." I nodded and left the room. The restroom was my next stop. Sephiroth and Jenova?
My head was spinning with questions. I stayed near people so Sephiroth couldn't come visit. How was he known to—the war hero, Sephiroth. Why had I never put two and two together? I met him when I was a small kid, he said he was 17 at the time. I remember that. He looks like he'd hardly aged a day, but it's been 10+ years! He must've aged. And who's Jenova? I needed answers. Sephiroth was going to answer them. He had the audacity to LIE TO ME! Why was I so upset? We'd hardly known eachother. As far as I'm concerned, I never asked. But still. He was best friends with my big brother, Zack Fair. It's actually how I met the young man. Zack's been MIA for years now. I heard Sephiroth was dead...
Wait.
What?
No.
It's impossible.
I heard Sephiroth was dead...Not only had I heard it, I saw his corpse on TV! Realization confused me to the point of dizziness. Or perhaps it's because it was 1PM and I hadn't drank anything and only ate a grilled cheese. I stood up, and felt dizzier than ever. Despite my shaking, I put one foot in front of the other and walked around, trying to distract myself from thoughts about Sephiroth, until I bumped into someone. "I'm so, so sorry!" I sputtered out quickly. I looked the man in the eyes shamefully. He had short, blonde hair. His bangs were swept to one side, his face was sharp, and his eyes were lifeless, empty. But he wore a smirk that screamed he's a big flirt. He shook his head and chuckled lowly. "I don't care, girl. But, you are a beauty. . . " I looked at him with a confused look plastered on my face. He was trying to flirt with me, I knew it. I was gonna shut him down gently when he said, "I'm Rufus Shinra, but you can call me Rufus. Would you like to go and have lunch?" —he laughed— "Not a date, of course. Not yet. Just, lunch. I'll buy, and even take you to a gourmet restaurant. I'd like to get to know you." He still wore a condescending smile, but I was starving. And he was polite enough about it. And, I'd just met Rufus Shinra. The heir to this glorious company! I could never pass up an opportunity like this. I smiled and nodded at him.
Rufus' smile turned genuine as he led me through the headquarters and out the doors. We'd been talking and laughing for so long I had actually forgotten about Sephiroth and Professor Hojo and all the weird stuff that happened. We got to a wonderful gourmet restaurant like he promised, and I tried to decline going in, saying it was much too expensive, but he said that he could pay for it all, and that I shouldn't worry. I reluctantly accepted his response and we went in. "Woah... this place is— magnificent!" I gawked at my surroundings in awe. The building was, simply put? Beautiful.
We ate, we talked, and Rufus and I got into a conversation about SOLDIER. I mentioned that my brother was a first class SOLDIER. He offered his condolences upon hearing his name, and I...almost mentioned Sephiroth. But it came up anyway. I didn't get much information, except that Sephiroth and Zack were somewhat close friends, at one point. I already knew that, of course. Rufus paid for the expensive lunch and walked me to my hotel. I expressed my thanks and left. He didn't bother to ask my number, but he brought it up, saying, "Are you single?" I said no, still staying loyal to sephiroth until further notice. He nodded and that was the end of it.
I stormed into my hotel room, slamming the door and throwing my bag on the bed. "Hello, my little Enig-" I turned an angry, desperate look onto him. "SHUT UP." His face twisted in amusement, unknowing the cause of my anger. "Someone's riled up! Why is that, I wonder?" His smirk only made me angrier. "I wonder too! I just found out that someone I REALLY FUCKING CARE ABOUT, is dead! And that he was good friends with my brother!" I almost couldn't stop the tears about to fall down my cheeks. I held on to my anger. It was all I could do to keep from crying and making a fool of myself right here. "I wonder who that is. I didn't realize you cared for many people," His look of amusement turned to one of confusion. "Who is your brother?" I stated at Sephiroth for a good while before even answering. "Zack Fair." His confusion turned into shock. Shock into fear. He realized he was the one whom I care about that was dead. Fear into dread. He hoped I wouldn't find out about his past. I figured it all out. "Enigma... can we not talk about this?" His cockiness was erased with a young man in fear of losing something very important to him, almost childlike. "You're Sephiroth, the war hero! I met you when I was like 7!-" "-10." "You were best friends with my brother! What happened!? You betrayed him! My brother is DEAD now too, because of YOU! What is there to talk about!?"
Sephiroth sighed, knowing he'd have to explain everything to me. "Listen, I didn't kill Zack." He paused, as if waiting for me to interject. When I gave him an expectant look, he continued. "Zack was killed while trying to escape Shinra. And as for me being 'dead', I'm clearly not." I fought the urge to roll my eyes. "Well clearly. So what the hell?" I was trying my damndest to calm down. Sephiroth spoke again. "Shinra pronounced me K.I.A. after I.. figured out who I truly am." It was my turn to look confused. "Figured out who you truly are?" He looked at me, almost ashamed.. "Yes. My mother is Jenova, the alien life form. It's my destiny to fulfill her mission on Gaia." I grew nervous. I figured out who Jenova was.. now yo figure out what this mission was about. "What.. mission? What's your 'destiny'?" He finally got up from the bed and approached me slowly. I backed away until I hit the wall. He stopped once he was right in front of me. "My mother's mission was to destroy this disgusting planet. And I shall fulfill her duty. That is my destiny." He looked proud of himself. I felt horrified, not knowing how to respond. I felt as if my whole world was crumbling. Sephiroth..wanted to destroy the planet..? My home? And he had the audacity to pretend he loved and cared about me?! I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't process my eyes swelling with tears. "
"You plan to destroy the planet? Everything on it? My home, my family? Me?" My voice was full of hurt. I could barely control my anger and pain. My voice clearly displayed how I felt. "Enigma, I'd never hurt you-" I wanted to scream at him. I wanted him to know how badly this hurt me. "You already have." My words seemed to have struck a chord with Sephiroth. He looked at me in hurt shock when I looked up to face him. He noticed my tears instantly. He slowly brought his hand to my cheek and wiped my tears away with his thumb. He looked genuinely sorry to see me cry. "Don't cry, my little enigma. I'll spare you.." his words were genuine. I could tell. But it still hurt, the fact that he didn't care about anything or anyone else. "What about the people I love? Sephiroth- please. Don't do this." He closed his eyes for a moment and leaned his forehead down to mine. He sighed. We stayed like this for a minute, before he gave me an ever-gentle kiss and backed away. He kept his hand against my cheek as he spoke.
"My lovely Enigma," He looked so lovely, I almost forgot all my anger and pain toward him. "You know I can't give up now."
