Selena

Don't freak out. Don't panic.

I'm frozen on the back seat of his car. It's dead silent and my breaths are so loud, he can probably hear them. He exits the gates of the country club, taking the long road back to the city. We're surrounded by trees and mountains. It's lush green and sunny. And if I was in my car by myself right now, I'd pull down my window and extend my arm out, basking in the warmth of the sunlight.

Speaking of arms...

My eyes trace him with a mind of their own. Sure, he's kidnapping me. I could probably sue him and my dad. Hell, I could call 911 right now. Deep down, all of this is my control. It's just a matter of how far I'm willing to take it.

But I can't do that to my dad. He can be extreme, but he loves me. Like, truly loves me. The unconditional, will love you no matter what you do or how much you hurt them, kind of love.

So I'll have to be clever with how I fix the situation. And it has to be with the least damage.

"Where are you going?" I break the silence.

"I can take you wherever you want." His voice darkens as he glances at me through the rearview mirror, amusement swirling in his rich brown eyes. "Within reason, of course."

He's so temptingly rascal. Unlike the other professionals who work for my dad, from rich backgrounds and prestigious education, Adam looks like he could chew them for breakfast, then pick his teeth with their bones.

"And who's the judge of that? You?" I raise my eyebrow.

"Pretty much. My goal is to keep you safe and I don't plan to let anyone get in the way of that, including you."

Excuse me?

I scoff out a laugh, crossing my legs as I slump back. "Are you sure about that?"

"Oh, yeah. So, where to?"

"I'll tell you in a couple of minutes." I unlock my phone and get to work.

My mind has two streams of thoughts that run at the same time. It's constant. One might watch TV and analyze the colors and patterns, while the second will analyze the people or what they're saying or doing and try to understand their motives, what to take from it, how to apply it to my personal needs.

It's fast. It's exhausting. It's a double-edged sword. And right now, it's speeding to cover all my opportunities to increase my chances of getting rid of Adam as soon as possible.

First things first. I call my best friend Imaan. I never call her. Like, in the last ten years of us being friends, I can probably count on my two hands how many times I've called her before. But I love her and I'd do anything for her, and she knows it. So she doesn't take my absence personal.

"Hey." She sounds distracted and out of breath, but I don't have time to ask why.

"I have an important question, can you come out tonight?"

There's a pause. "What for?"

"An emergency."

"Yeah, I can come out. What's going on? Are you okay?"

I wish we could speak our own alien language so Adam wouldn't understand. "I don't have time to explain, but let's go to Cloud at like 8 or 9 and I'll tell you everything, okay?"

"Okay, do you need a ride?"

That's so sweet of her. She knows I hate driving at nights, it stresses me out. "No, I'm good, but thank you. Okay, I'll see you soon. Love you, bye."
