Florence's POV

I grimaced at Beam, who was giving me a stern stare, a single dark eyebrow raised. Her brown eyes, the colour of coffee were narrowed suspiciously, but at the same time a triumphant smirk covered her face. The girl had jumped me as I walking to my locker, forcing me into the nearest empty classroom and cornering me, her small hands on her hips.

That’s when Beam started questioning me of my recent whereabouts, and why my relationship with Christie had shot downhill. Beam couldn’t understand how I’d gone to getting the best with Christie from Rhonda’s group to hating her to most. I didn’t tell Beam it was because Christie was the biggest cock-blocker ever.

For the last few weeks, I had been sneaking away from the group to spend time with Roy. We both hoped that no one, especially my brother, would catch us. I don’t why I didn’t tell Beam, however. I trusted the girl with my very life and usually told her everything.

At the age of eleven, Beam had been new at my school and I met her when she tripped and yelled “Ouch!” as she was falling. ‘Ouch’ is apparently the word Thai people use instead of ‘Ow’, so naturally I thought it was hilarious. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love it and use it now, but it just sounded so funny at the time, combined with the look of utter fear on Beam’s face.

When I made of her, she leapt to her feet with a vicious scream and proceeded to chase me around the school, yelling all the ‘nastiest’ words she knew, which basically were ‘twerp’ and ‘dumb-dumb’ and ‘Come back here!’. Turns out that despite her size, she was an incredibly fast runner and managed to launch herself at me, catching me around the waist and taking me down like a rugby player…

Right at the feet of the principal. We were given an on-the-spot notice of a week’s detention. We’ve been best friends ever since. We were practically ‘Siamese Twins’, as Damon fondly put it.

All in all, we were joined at the hip and knew literally everything about each other. Well… Almost everything. We were currently in the back of an empty classroom, next to the supply closet and a couple of desks. Looking about the room, I realised it would take us practically getting through a maze just to get out… Not a good thing, since I was starving at this very moment.

“Come on, Flo… You can tell me… Is it me?” Beam suddenly asked, her eyes going wide with fear. I swear I even saw her tear up a little bit. “Whatever I did, I’m sorry!” She was shaking a little, like she was going to collapse to her knees and beg for forgiveness, but all I did was burst out laughing, shaking my head.

Oh Beam… Always freaking out at things she shouldn’t.

“Of course not, Beam… You haven’t done anything,” I assured her, pulling her into a hug. “I’ve just been… busy.” Beam gave me a suspicious look. “I swear… I haven’t replaced you with a prostitute,” I told her seriously and she chuckled, slapping my shoulder.

“Alright then, you harlot,” she giggled as the classroom door open. Instantly, for no particular reason other than fear that it was principal catching us spray painting the toilets again or something, Beam and I dropped to the floor, trying not to laugh. We saw three pairs of legs enter the room through the legs of chairs and tables.

One pair was bare legs with pink strappy high heels, the second wore a pair of baggy tanned jeans and sneakers, and the third wore black tights with dark brown ugg boots.

I spotted Beam grimacing as Rhonda spoke, and I could understand why. At this moment, she had such an annoying whine to her voice that I wanted to get up and punch her. I nearly did too, but Beam quickly grabbed my wrist and pinned it to the ground, giving me a silent look that clearly said no, no, don't do that, no. I glared at her, but she stared firmly back.
