Spock figured that he should check on Mac'hla.
Today's mission had been trying, and Mac'hla, of course, had gotten injured.
Always getting hurt, that one. Putting herself in danger for the safety of others.
Mr. Scott had almost fallen off a cliff, but thanks to Mac'hla's quick thinking and reflexes, he had been caught. Unfortunately, Mac'hla had sprained their ankle in the process.
A very small injury given what could have happened, but Spock knew how clumsy Mac'hla was to begin with, and having a sprained ankle surely couldn't do them any good.
Furthermore, she had been absolutely exhausted upon returning. Spock could see the dark circles under her eyes once they had beamed aboard.
He needed to make sure that Mac'hla was asleep. One way or another, he would find a way to put her to sleep, even if it took a nerve pinch.
He wasn't entirely sure why he felt the need to check on her.
He kept telling himself it was because they are a Lieutenant and must attend to their duties with full alertness. But deep down, the reason he was pretending didn't exist, was that he was concerned for their well being. Though he would not openly admit it, he really did care and worry about them.
As he went to knock, the door slid open.
It was unlocked, so surely she was awake.
"Lieutenant, you should be slee-" his words fell silent as he saw Mac'hla.
She was curled up in a small ball with a book tented over her face, and snoring quietly.
He paused for a moment before approaching.
They couldn't sleep like this... it must be awfully uncomfortable.
He pulled the book from their face and placed the bookmark in before closing it and putting it on their bedside table.
He gently pulled off her glasses and placed them on top of the book.
He searched around for her blankets, which were balled up in the corner of her room.
He rolled his eyes, wondering how in the hell they had ended up all the way over there. He untangled them and draped them loosely over her sleeping frame.
He stared at them for a minute, pleased to see them sleeping. He brushed a lock of black hair away from their face.
"Goodnight, Lieutenant."
