Losing Kyland

Setting Arrangments

Two days have passed Jade hasn't spoken a word since. She has done nothing but lay in bed staring at the wall where his letterman jacket and hoodie he left in her room stayed. It still smelled like him. Her mother Lily came into the room to check on Jade.
"Jade Honey, are you okay?" she asked knowing the truth but hoping to get an answer, one word something to let her know she's alive.
"Yeah." Jade responds in a hushed tone.
Glad she said a single word Lily retreated to the stairs and went down to the living room.
Two days. Two days since Kyland, since the football regular season had ended as they were debating on canceling the rest of their season due to the tragedy that occurred. Two days since Lily lost her little girl Jade.
Two days Jade refused to leave her bed but today on day three she is forced to face the world. Samantha Simms, Kyland's Mother and Jewel Simms, Kyland's Sister called and asked if Jade would be willing to ride to make Kylands arrangements. Though Lily didn't like the idea and thought it would be too much too soon for her daughter Jade agreed and went with them , she felt it was the right thing to do. She showered and got ready to face the day. She grabbed his hoodie on the way out of the door and headed to Samantha's car.
As Jade turned her phone in for the first time in two days she was hopefully expecting a text from Kyland that she knew wasn't coming instead she saw a news article from the local news app. The news article read the following:
Kyland Ray Simms seventeen year old star running back for the Riverside Nighthawks killed in a shooting during the homecoming game against Southside Hornets on September 16,2022.
As she saw the headline she wanted to crawl back under the blanket but today of all days she had to be strong, and face the day.
The car ride was quiet, erie, and uneasy. They all knew it would never be the same.
Kyland had a birthday in a few days now he will never get to know what it's like turning 18. They decided to make the funeral a celebration of Kyland and to have a mini party on his birthday after the funeral with anyone from school or anyone who knew Kyland. It would be a time where they would be able to celebrate getting to know someone like Kyland.
Jade had to be ready to face school. She would be at school. She was able to spend monday with his family but Tuesday morning she would have to face school and the eyes she knew she would receive everyone feeling sorry for her acting like she is some broken doll. She knew one way or another she would have to eventually go back to school and deal with the reality of walking through those doors without Kyland. She decided it would be better to face them now rather than later.
Everyone met Tuesday morning surrounding his locker for a moment of silence. A moment for remembering who Kyland Ray Simms was to everyone he had ever encountered.
