I was in the library, serving detention alone, when it happened. I heard a crash, and, seeing as I was the only one in the library, went to go see what had happened.
I saw a brown-haired girl in a heap, with books all around her.
"What happened? I could've sworn I saw no one come in..." I thought aloud.
Her brown eyes shot up, falling on me. Her lips formed a perfect O, and she shot up. She pulled some sort of stick out of her pocket, and suddenly, all the books flew onto the shelves.
"Wha-"
She grabbed my upper arm, grasping it firmly in her hand as she waved the stick.
I felt wind rush through me, and suddenly, my feet slammed into hard, solid ground.
"Where - what happened? Where am I?"
The girl spun around exasperated. "Look. It's your fault I had to bring you here. Now stop talking!"
I jutted out my chin defiantly, but didn't speak.
She tapped the stick on the wall, and a woman walked out of an invisible door.
"Sophia." the woman sounded shocked to see the girl - Sophia? - and glanced at me. "What is she doing here?" the woman hissed.
"I ended up a few kilometres away from... my destination, and this girl saw me. I had to bring her."
The woman sighed. "I see. And what do you propose we do with her?"
"Erase her memories." Sophia said it like it was the obvious choice.
The woman shook her head. "Sophia, you know it's not that easy. Ever since the Verdict of Secrecy -"
"The Verdict is dumb!" Sophia interrupted. "We all know it! You're the one who told me so, Aunt Lucia!"
Lucia rubbed her forehead. "I know what I said, but it doesn't work like that. Now we have choice but to keep her here."
Hearing this, I decided to speak up.
"Uh, you do realise I can hear you, right?"
Lucia looked at me. "Yes. Of course."
"So... you can't just keep me here against my will!"
Sophia rolled her eyes. "You don't really have a choice. We're the only ones who can Volare, and the only way out is by Volaration. So you literally have to stay."
"Sophia!" Lucia scolded. "Why don't you go see if your father needs help?"
Sophia left, muttering under her breath.
"Now, I'm truly sorry, but despite the unkind words, Sophia is right. Unfortunately you don't have a choice. Now, you will be staying with me for the time being, until you go to stay at the Academy - what's your name?"
"Alexia."
"You don't have a last name?"
"I don't like it." I said firmly, thinking with a pang of my parents. I shook my head, blinking the memories away.
"Then you can pick a new one - but it will be your name from now on."
I thought for a moment. "Can I be Alexia Moondawn?" It was a name I'd dreamed about for years.
"Sure. But now we have to get going."
Lucia grabbed my arm, and with a swish of her own stick - wand, whatever you want to call it - we Volared.
