Evalyn didn't stay in the dorm that night. She claimed she was 'having a sleepover' with some other friends, but I knew she was just trying to give me space. Which I simultaneously needed and didn't want.
I couldn't sleep, as you can imagine. At about 9, I heard a faint knock on the door.
Assuming it was Evalyn, I called softly, "Come in."
But the person who walked through the door was not Evalyn. In fact, I didn't even know the person.
It was a tall teenage boy with messily combed brown hair and nervous gray eyes. His uniform was wrinkled, but it looked like it had been ironed just this morning.
"Uh, is Lyn here?" he asked, his eyes darting around the room anxiously as he shifted his weight from foot to foot.
"Lyn?" I tilted my head, confused. "Who's Lyn?"
His cheeks tinted pink. "I meant Evalyn."
"Oh. No, not right now. She's spending the night with her other friends." I smiled apologetically.
He turned to leave.
"May I ask who you are?"
Still not looking at me, he answered. "Andrew Matthews."
My eyebrows shot up in surprise, but I composed myself quickly before he saw. "Oh, Evalyn's boyfriend."
He turned red, then nodded, again moving to the doorway.
"Well, I'd tell you the room number if I knew it." I apologized.
"Thanks anyway." his gaze darted across Evalyn's half of the room.
"Uh... are you looking for something?" I asked hesitantly.
He shook his head, his eyes finally landing on me. "Sorry, I have ADHD - Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder."
I nodded, understanding. "My little brothers, James and Jake, both have minor diagnoses of that."
He nodded, yet again moving towards the door. Then stopped, as though a thought suddenly came to him. "Well, can you let Evalyn know I was looking for her?"
"Sure."
He turned to leave, and stopped just inside the doorway. "Thanks."
"Anytime." I smiled faintly as he finally disappeared, closing the door gently.
He's perfect for Evalyn. I thought to myself.
Not even two minutes after Andrew's departure, another knock was sounded on my door.
"It's open, Andrew." I held back a laugh. What did he forget this time?
But the brown-haired boy wearing a crumpled uniform that walked in wasn't my roommate's boyfriend.
"Who's Andrew?"
I looked away. "Evalyn's boyfriend."
"Really?" he didn't sound convinced.
I huffed, "What do you want?"
He sighed, and sat down on the floor, leaning against the closed door. "I want to apologize. And for things to go back to normal between us."
I laughed. "It's a little late for that, don't you think, Prince who thinks that I am too good for him?"
He winced. "Yeah... I know it sounds wrong, but really, it's true."
I rolled my eyes, and he continued.
"You're my best friend, Lex. I don't want my family-" he spat the word out like it was venom - "to ruin our perfectly good friendship."
