The words circled faster and faster in her brain. Whirling from a simple response to a singular stream of non stop thought. 'You're nothing but a filthy little mudblood.' Yourenothingbutafilthylittlemudblood' YOURENOTHINGBUTAFILTHYLITTLEMUDBLOOD'
That word. Even if it came from the mouth of that snob Draco Malfoy, Hermione couldn't forget it. In response she did what she always did best. Research. However no matter what cultural or historical book she pulled from the library shelves, no matter how many hundreds of pages she read the term did not come up. She did make notice of many more topics to further her understanding at a later point in time.
With frustration painted firmly on her face, Hermione drew back her unmanageable curls into a quick knot at the base of her skull and grabbed her bag. Huffing from the weight dragging down her right shoulder she lumbered as fast as she could towards Madam Pince. The librarian sat at the front desk near the door meticulously scanning the books piled next to her. Although only a few months into the school year Hermione easily got along with the some what unpleasant woman. She was very strict and held a lot of love for each and every book in the library. Much like Hermione was beginning to.
Standing at the edge of the organized yet full desk Hermione bit her lip and waited until the librarians eyes stopped scanning and lifted from the book in her hands.
"Madam Pince" She greeted with a nod of her head. Pince marked her spot in the book and closed it.
"Ms. Granger"
Taking a deep breath Hermione prepared herself for her question, having the feeling this was not a commonly acceptable conversation topic.
"Sorry to bother you this evening but I have a question about a term I am struggling to find the meaning to. I've already searched all of the books I would think might contain something to help but now I am starting to believe this word is not something often found in polite conversation."
Meeting the librarians dark brown eyes Hermione saw the twitch of her brow and slight down turn of her lips.
"Go on." Madam Pince instructed.
Giving a quick swing of her head to and fro the girl confirmed their somewhat isolation from the rest of the library residents. Fingers tightening around her book bag indicated her nerves.
"I heard another classmate use it in a sentence. The word was Mudbllood."
The madam grave a small gasp. Tsking and shaking her hatted head a flicker of sadness shone in her eyes as her mouth perused.
"That term is something that one will not find in books located here in our esteemed library. Readily available nor in the restricted section. It's very unfortunate one as young as you were exposed to such terrible bigotry. The term was something many used for a witch or wizard that was born from muggles. In reference to not having a pure magical blood line." Pince concluded.
An uncomfortable twist pulled at Hermione heart. She had a feeling she was not going to like the answer. Even though it had confirmed something that was unpleasant that small part of her brain whispered to her how at least now she knew. She would not be ignorant again.
"Thank you Madam Pince. I am glad to know the library would no hold such a horrid topic I do find myself wondering about all that I will come across that I will not understand because I am not able to research it. If I find myself in a similar situation in the future what would you suggest I do?"
"Humph" The librarian crossed her arms. "I would suggest, other than asking someone more knowledgeable than yourself, although do not bother me with ridiculous things in the future, that you should first try the bookstore in Hogsmead. Or if you find the time you can travel to the library of Alexandria. Topics such of those will most likely however be found in personal journals."
Knowing she was running out of the unusual kindness of the librarian Hermione nodded again before readjusting her bag and heading toward the library exit.
Her assignments had been completed and she was ahead for the next lesson for each class. Hermione was set to focus on studying her next important topic.
Pure bloods. Because of course, knowledge is power.
This story is going to be based off a morally grey Ravenclaw Hermione, who you will find is more logical and knowledge hungry. I see her family as upper middle class, both being successful dentists that own their own practice and live in a great neighborhood. I will loosely base the story time line off of the original series. However of course, certain characters and events will change. Just like my Mudblood sentence did. I hope you enjoy.
