You were sitting in Photography class with Max, the two of you sat at the back of the room. Mr Jefferson was talking to the class about photography and the timeline of it.
Max had fallen asleep, maybe she was tired from studying late last night with you. Homework had been kicking your butts lately and you guys both decided on catching up on homework yesterday, so maybe she was just feeling tired from not getting enough rest.
About 5 minutes had passed and you were about to try and wake Max up when suddenly she awoke and lifted her head quickly in shock and almost fell off of her chair like she had just seen or heard something. She looked so confused and worried.
"Hey, are you okay?" You asked her in worry
"Oh, what? Yeah I'm fine, just really tired" She whispered to you hoping she didn't catch anyone's attention from the sudden action.
There were a few silent moments between you as you focused your attention back to the lesson.
Then she tapped your shoulder and mouthed to you asking if you wanted to take a photo with her on her polaroid instant camera and you nodded. She picked up the camera and positioned it so the two of you were in frame and then clicked the button.
The polaroid dispensed out of the camera and she took it and then shook it before putting it in her pocket.
She was about to put her camera back on the table and listen to the lecture when Mr. Jefferson turned to the both of you and asked her a question.
"Now, Max, since you've captured our interest and clearly want to join the conversation, can you please tell us the name of the process that gave birth to the first self-portraits?" Mr. Jefferson asked her.
Since Max was zoned out for what you guessed was quite a while, she didnt know how to answer the question so she answered with what she first thought of.
"I did know! ...But I kinda forgot."
"You either know this or not, Max. Is there anybody here who knows their stuff?"
Then one of the girls answered, Max had told you her name was Victoria Chase. She was apparently a exact copy of those girls from mean girls but in real life, she was also friends with Nathan Prescott.
"Louis Daguerre was a French painter who created "daguerreotypes" a process that gave portraits a sharp reflective style, like a mirror.
She turned to Max
"Now you're totally stuck in the Retro Zone. Sad face." She looked over at Max.
Then you heard one of her friends Taylor laugh.
"Very good, Victoria. The Daguerreian Process brought out fine detail in people's faces, making them extremely popular from the 1800's onward. The first American daguerreotype self-portrait was done by Robert Cornelius. You can find out all about him... In your textbook. Or even... online."
The Bell rung signaling class was over.
"And guys, don't forget the deadline to submit a photo in the "Everyday Heroes" contest. I'll fly out with the winner to San Francisco where you'll be feted by the art world. It's great exposure, and it can kickstart a career in photography. So, Stella and Alyssa, get it together. Taylor, don't hide. I'm still waiting for your entry, too. And yes, Max, I see you pretending not to see me."
You got your bag and grabbed your phone off the desk and got off your chair tucking it in.
Max was still sitting down at her desk, she looked confused like something bad had just happened. You decided to ask her what was wrong.
