"so that was breakfast then?" I asked as we walked out of waffle house. He looked over at me and laughed.
"yes." Andrew said matter-of-factly. That night I learned that about Andrew, everything was matter of fact, if he wanted something to happen, it would happen. Not so much as bossy, but determined. I liked it.
He got into the car and he looked over at me.
"Thank you Aubrey." I don't get this boy.
"Don't thank me." he looked confused for half a second. But he just turned on the car and backed out of the parking lot.
"do you have a girlfriend?" I don't know where that question came from but it bursted out, and I said it so quickly it sounded more like "du-rew-hiv-a-girfen" I immediately blushed and looked away from him an out the window.
"No. I don't usually do girlfriends." he looked ahead at the road, his eyebrows furrowed together.
"why not?" why can't I quit asking these questions?
"I, well, er, what happens when you love them more than you? What do you do then? They kick you to the curb and keep going. Leaving you." he sounded distant. His eyes were cold, he suddenly looked over at me and they became full of life again, bright green gems.
"that sounded so mean. I'm sorry." he apologized. "I don't even know why I said that. I shouldn't have. I just-"
"Andrew." I cut him off, "its fine I know what you mean." I did. My dad left and never came back. When I was seven I went school, I remember him waving goodbye but when I came home, no one was there. My mother came home eventually and she asked where he was, I shrugged. She looked around and was on the phone for another hour until the tears came. That's when she told me. Told me I didn't have a dad anymore. I always figured he'd never come back. He never did.
I looked over at Andrew and I felt tears pricking my eyes, begging to come out. I wasn't going to let them. He looked over at me and saw something was wrong. I could Tell he knew by the look in his eye. He pulled off the interstate and turned off the car before pulling me into a hug and telling me everything was fine.
"everything isn't fine." I told him. Then I told him everything. He listened and didn't say anything. He didn't look bored, he looked like he cared, like he knew what I was talking about.
"I can't believe I just told you that," I told him touching my lips to see if I really had them moving, telling him that.
"You can tell me anything you want to." I sighed and he reached over and hugged me again. I loved the way he smelled, like soap, clean soap.
"Tell me something about you now." I told him to do. He did too. He told me about finding his mom with another man, about all the thoughts that went through his head. I knew I could trust Andrew, he knew he could trust me too.
"Aubrey?"
"Hmm?"
"I have a surprise for you." I looked at my phones clock: 7:05 a.m. I would call my mom later.
"what is it?" I asked eager like a little kid.
"I'm taking you to the most magical place on earth." he smiled.
And that's exactly where he took me.
