________Felicity had always loved the rain.
It had been one of her defining traits as she had grown up, the one thing she was really known for. All of her cousins or friends liked dolls, superheros or certain tv shows and it showed in the gifts they were given for birthdays and Christmas.
With her it was different.
What shall we get Felicity this year? A pair of wellies? A new waterproof coat? Some toys that will last in the rain?
One year she had even gotten a rain catcher and that had formed a new constant obsession. She dumped it out and cleaned it every morning and night, recording the amount of rainfall that collected between each cleaning.
As she grew older, the obsession settled and was replaced with something new, her own mobile phone, but the love never strayed.
Everyone in school had known how far her love for the rain went and even the teachers were aware, always making sure to call her attention away from the windows whenever the weather got particularly dreary during class. They all teased her good naturedly, joking that she must be a water fairy or some sort of nature sprite.
The notion was ridiculous, of course, but she never truly denied them, simply laughing along with everyone else. Maybe in another life she had been some sort of rain spirit but in this one she was just a girl who loved the comforting, moody weather that seemed to suck the joy out of everyone else.
Rainy evenings and nights in particular were her favourite, the pitter patter of the drops hitting the windows and roof soothing her while she read a book or watched a movie, covered in a mountain of blankets like some sort of fortress.
In Felicity's opinion, nothing was better than getting caught in the rain on her way home, jumping into a hot shower and feeling the heat soak into the bitter cold that had been seeping into her bones. That, followed by tugging on some cozy pjs and hunkering down with a fresh book was the perfect way to end a day.
Her older sister, Freya, had quite the opposite view. Rain was that girl's enemy and it had been ever since she could remember.
For no reason other than because it ‘ruined’ a perfectly good football match.
Freya and Felicity had been like two peas in a pod from the second the younger girl had popped out, never really straying too far from each other unless they really had to.
This had also meant that, when Freya had joined the 8 and over girls football club, five year old Felicity had demanded to tag along and watch, not wanting to be left out from her sister's new group.
Their mum had warned her that she wouldn't like it, had told her that it was the same sport that Felicity proclaimed as ‘boooooringggg’ whenever anyone watched it at home, but the young girl hadn't believed her.
The second the ball connected with one of the members' feet, kicking it across the field, Felicity had put two and two together and instantly began begging her mum to take her home, all the fun of seeing her sisters new club instantly draining away.
She had been denied, of course, her mum smiling knowingly as she lovingly ran fingers through her youngest's hair, murmuring distracting things even as her proud eyes never left the game her eldest was currently dominating.
Freya had never missed a practice or game since, football taking over her life, while Felicity never willingly stepped near anything to do with football ever again.
The difference in affection for the sport never affected their love for each other. Freya knew that Felicity supported her in every game, willing her to win:
