OF GOLD AND BLOOD
A million mouths have whispered the old tale
of a war where a thousand ships once sailed
for a beauty that invaded the hearts of all,
and where a hero and his beloved would fall. The bright-haired shines in the light of the sun,
the scrawny dud protects half of their one—
the two met by fate, lingered for curiosity,
in each gaze exchanged sparked compatibility.Companion from youth 'til it became more.
For days, one could wait and one could walk sore—
no mountains, oceans nor intent could separate,
even sons and princesses as he is his mate. The stars, skies, grass—all of this—bear witness
of a fear that created a promise;
the moon of the legend shall be the last to go
as the golden one could not carry the sorrow.Gained crowds and bloodshed for his pedestal
while nights with him are sweet as ambrosia.
The affair of the rare is seen across the camps,
tight-lipped are most, but kings talked of what they know not.Challenged by pride and opportunities,
but the toil was ceased by a prophecy
of twain best's demise 'fore the vigorous first-born,
come following the soul of the one left to yearn.Empty is the years drifting in their dreams,
hinting of their last wish to be redeemed—
to blend what was left together under the earth
as two become one in the underworld.*
