It's been a week ago ever since my boyfriend former Oregon Duck and future Tennessee Titan Marcus Mariota proposed to me at a Memphis Grizzlies home game against the Golden State Warriors with my best friends Alex and Anela. Why am I dating Marcus Mariota?" you may ask. In case if you guys didn't know, I'm Ashley Sanchez, the younger sister of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Mark Sanchez, and I'm a junior team captain for the Duke Blue Devils Women's Volleyball Team, and a highly rated draft prospect for the USA Women's Volleyball Team, and the women's PVL club Carolina Flight, and knowing that digging and spiking the ball will stop for me at one point, I majored double majored in English and Psychology to teach as Psychology professor at Duke once I retire, and minored in Officiating to also be a volleyball coach there as well. I'm 5'10, have brown eyes and long hair, super tan, slim, and athletic. My best friend is Alex Allen, older sister of Duke Blue Devils point guard Grayson Allen, who is a freshman, and she is a junior, and is a double major in English and History since she will be a Sports History professor once she retires from her WNBA career . She stands at 5'11, has perfect pale porcelain skin, brown hair with toffee ombre, gray eyes, slim, athletic, and is a two-sport star at Duke, and is a highly rated WNBA draft prospect for Atlanta Dream, and much to her younger brother's dismay, then eventual approval, she is going out with junior Wisconsin Badger Power Forward and NBA Draft Prospect Sam Dekker, whom the Atlanta Hawks have been scouting ever since the Badger's second Final Four run. She is an excellent basketball player as a shooting guard/small forward, and has won many awards from ACC Offensive MVP player of the week during their ACC conference championship final in Greensboro, NC to the Women's NCAA Final Four and junior Offensive Player of the Year when they went against the UConn Huskies in Tampa Bay when she helped lead the Lady Blue Devils to their third Final Four with our other best friend Anela Ellis, younger sister of Monta Ellis and senior point guard of the team, and Naismith Trophy Winner, and top WNBA draft prospect for the Los Angeles Sparks, and is dating Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. They won with an upset of 68-63 and put those little puppies back into their playpens. Whenever Alex is not a machine gun shooting perfect threes on the court ,performing many perfect layups, blocks, and steals, and is on off-season, she is my co-general of the floor in the volleyball court as an avid outside hitter scoring many points for us with many digs and spikes. Anyway, back to my story, since Sam, Alex, Stephen, Anela, and I are on summer break and off season, and are coming back home with me to Tennessee, and Marcus is going to meet my aunt and my extended family for the first time EVER, and I'm super nervous hoping that my aunt will like him. He reassured me by being genuinely happy to see my aunt. When I went to my aunt's house, my nerves came back. I rang the doorbell with one hand while my other is intertwined with Marcus's hand. He smiled and I smiled back nervously. My aunt answered the door with a smile when she saw Sam, Stephen, Anela, Alex, and I, but once she saw Marcus, her smile faded a bit. "Come in. Come in. " She said neutrally. I walked in with Marcus coming after me, his hand still holding mine, and Alex following after us with Sam following behind her. We were greeted by other family members with gentle smiles. Alex,Sam, Anela, and Steph found their seats while Marcus and I stood awkwardly, until my aunt walked over "Ashley, mija have a seat!" My aunt exclaimed, pulling me from him. I was signaling for him to sit next to me. My aunt exclaimed "No, that seat is for your cousin Maria." she said. I sat directly across from Marcus, Maria sitting to my left, and my aunt sitting to my right. My aunt began serving plates, and without serving Marcus, she said "Let's say grace-" "Tía, you didn't give Marcus a plate." I interrupted. She glanced at me, then back at him. My family sat around quietly, watching the scene. "Marcus, hijo, I'm sure you can get yourself a plate, right?" He pursed his lips into a flat line and nodded softly, getting up. He heard me mumble something in Spanish, as he went to go get a plate. My aunt then proceeded to say grace without Marcus. All night long, my aunt gave Marcus dirty looks and had something to say whenever he did. It was very obvious to me and everyone, at the table, that she didn't like him. At. All. I tried to talk to Marcus, but my aunt would butt in, trying to stop him every single time. Stephen and Sam seem to be generally appalled at how bad my aunt is treating Marcus, but Alex and Anela had to calm them and reassure them that Marcus and I can handle the ordeal, and that they are there as guests. Since he couldn't talk to me, he made small talk with my cousin Christian. "Marcus, has anyone ever taught you that it's rude to whisper around others?" My aunt snarled. "Lo siento señora Sanchez." I clenched my jaw tightly, as it was taking everything in me not to say anything back. "It seems to me as if he wasn't raised properly." She retorted. She has crossed the line. He dropped his fork, standing up from the table. " Señora Sanchez, I have tried all night long to say anything to you, but you have pushed me to it. I was raised just fine, muchas gracias. I'm questioning you were raised, treating people you've never met like crap, judging them before you even get to know them." He said all in one breath. Alex, Sam, Steph, and Anela all looked at him with wide eyes. He felt good getting that off his chest, and they blinked their eyes back to normal. "I respect you, but I just can't take it anymore." He finished, gathering his things, storming out of the dining room furiously. "Buenas noches everyone." He said, leaving quickly. He was outside, going to get into the get into the car when he heard me calling for him. "Marcus, wait baby!" I said as he turned around. "I told you she wouldn't like me." with pain, anger, and disappointment tainting his voice. "Baby, for you to stand up to my aunt like that, it takes guts." I started, holding his hands in mine. " I would never in a million years have enough guts myself to do that." I smiled, my baby-face dimples very visible. I was trying to lighten up the mood. He smiled lightly, with his face returning to normal. "I'm so sorry for my tia babe." I said, rubbing his shoulder. "No, I'm sorry." a new voice said, joining the conversation. "I shouldn't have acted the way I did. I just wanted to protect mi sobrina." she said, smiling lightly at me. "Mi tía más querida , Marcus is an amazing guy, and I know you'll love him if you just give him the chance." I explained, holding his hand. "Well lets get back inside you dos pájaros del amor. It's pretty humid out here." She joked, noticing light rain about to fall. She smiled at Marcus and I as we all got back in to enjoy dinner and good fun with my friends and family. Two months later, we all drafted to our dream teams! I'll play for Carolina Flight, and USA Volleyball, Alex for the Atlanta Dream, Sam for the Atlanta Hawks, and Anela for the Los Angeles Sparks while still keeping in touch and hanging out every chance we get off season.
