Childhood moves quickly in seconds and minutes and nothing can stop it.
Miriam knew that all too well.
She had never tasted childhood.
While her parents went to parties and celebrations she watched after Wendy and then her brothers.
It was all she had ever known and when she turned eighteen she knew that her life would stay the same.
It was late in the afternoon as Miriam sat in her room in the attic sketching something she always saw in her dreams.
A silver hook that was sharper than a classic blade.
Suddenly her door opened.
"Miriam my darling have you seen by butterfly hairpin?
Michael had it last yet he started that you had it" said her mother.
"I found the treasure in his game.
It's on my nightstand" said Miriam.
It had been a year since Wendy, Michael and John started talking as if they had gone to a place called neverland.
Miriam belived it all which made her seem immature when rather it made her rather curious.
"Ah thank you my darling.
My and your father must visit an old friend of mine tonight.
He's rather unwell.
I hope you understand" said her mother.
"Of course," said Miriam.
Her mother walked behind Miriam and placed her hands on Miriam's shoulders.
"You can always invite David to the house so you do not have to be alone" said her mother.
"I do not feel anything for him.
He's quite immature" said Miriam.
"All the boys your age are immature Miriam" said her mother.
Miriam since she was fifteen had been strangely attracted to older men.
She couldn't explain it as if she told anyone the truth she would be called mad.
Miriam continued sketching to avoid having that particular conversation again.
Her mother looked at her with sad eyes before looking at her sketch.
"What are you sketching?" her mother asked as she looked at Miriam's sketch.
"A silver hook," said Miriam.
"It's quite lovely," said her mother before she walked towards the door.
"Before I and your father leave I can't you to know that we both love you very much my darling," said her mother.
"I know mother," Miriam said before looking at her mother.
"I love you both as well," Miriam said.
Her mother smiled before walking out of the room.
Miriam looked at her sketch before sighing.
She then walked out of her room and went downstairs.
"Wendy, Michael, John" Miriam said as she walked to the nursery.
"We're in here," said Michael.
Miriam walked into the nursery to see John and Michael making a treasure map as Wendy sat on the window ledge looking at the night sky.
"Mother and father are visiting an old friend tonight so I will be watching after you all," said Miriam softly.
"You mean just us two.
Wendy hasn't stopped watching the moon as she's waiting for Peter pan" said John.
"He said he would come back on this night a year from the last time I saw him," said Wendy.
"Then he will visit.
A man's word is unbreakable" Miriam said.
"He isn't a man yet," said Wendy.
Miriam looked at Wendy "If I make some tea and biscuits will you take a moment to not be by the window?" Miriam asked.
"Will they be the ones with frosting?" Wendy asked.
"If you wish them to be then they shall be," said Miriam.
Miriam often craved more in life but this was good enough to satisfy her.
Anything else would be too much or too perfect.
