That night, the forest came alive with a golden glow.
Birds fled from their woodsy homes when it sparked the darkness of night ablaze. Even a pack of Mightyena residing deep within the forest, their very territory, perked up when everything was placed under the light for just a moment. They discussed among one another, their ears sticking high up on their heads in alert, and then they dismissed themselves from the den.
They cautiously scoped out the woods, smelling the scent on the ground here, pawing at the dirt there — a sense of familiarity. Some recognized the smell in the air, one belonging to a rabbit that once stepped foot in here.
But... that couldn't be right.
The rabbit was dead.
The walked together in a wide array, like an army of soldiers marching to war, eventually ending up back where they had their last fruitful meal.
Not long ago, the rabbit's remains were simply dumped in the damp ground. A spray of crimson blood splattered the grass.
Now, the bones were gone, and so was the blood.
Suspicious of this dark magic, clearly, the hyenas surveyed the clearing in the woods. They double-checked the very spot they had feasted on the weak rabbit, sniffing the ground where the blood once stained fresh grass but now there was nothing. No blood, no bones, not even the smell of death.
The hyenas all looked at one another, curious.
This wasn't right. The rabbit was dead.
Dead.
They ate her.
The leader of the pack, the bulkiest Mightyena, blinked his tiresome eyes, a careless face as if shaking off the weight of this unreal situation.
The others, still shocked and stuck in wonder, hesitantly joined in on the carelessness. Another thing to worry over a different day, right?
Wrong.
When they had begun to leave the area and return to the den, out of the darkness came a fleeting shadow, masked against the inky cover of dark. It soared through the air with incredible speed, its body so quick that it shook the leaves hanging high above the ground.
The hyenas could not react.
In rapid succession, the pack was struck. Quick as lightning, iron jabs were dealt to each Mightyena, so strong and packed with the feeling of vengeance that the attacks — perhaps kicks — shattered the bony torsos of the Pokémon.
It ended just as fast as it had begun.
Every hyena, once tired and ready for bed, was downed. Unable to move, barely able to breathe with their broken ribs, fragments of bone piercing their lungs.
Their desperate whimpers were cut short when the shadowy attacker took every one of their lives by severing their heads. Not with a weapon, no — with its bare leg. A kick so sharp it rivaled the steel of a blade.
It was all over, and now the shadow stood amidst the fallen bodies it had created. It looked down at the headless animals, a glimmer in its eye and a cold expression on its face, but not a soul could see who it was.
Shortly after, it turned to the night sky and hopped from its feet, a powerful jump that tossed it high into the dark. Away it went, never to be seen again by that forest.
"You are not finished."
