TWO
"Mom they were there, I saw them!" It all happened so fast, but it felt like everything was moving in slow motion.
"I know sweetheart. I'm sorry but we can't just go in there, maybe when we come back by the school they'll come out?" I could hear in her voice that she felt sorry. She of all people knew how obsessed I am with meeting my mystery person, this person that was bound to me with this string. I knew nothing about them nor they knew anything about me, were they a guy or girl? Would I even get along with them?! I have no answer, and I won't have one until I meet them.
While I was lost in thought we arrived at the store. I'll have to think about this later, it's time for me to clear my head.
-----
The store was packed. More so than usual, I guess there was a good sale going on today. While we were walking in the store I made sure to follow close behind my parents, similar like a child would or a puppy would to its mother. Observing the items and people we passed to get to the items we needed. No matter how hard I try I can't get the incident out of my head. 'I wonder if there's any way to communicate.' I try to search my brain to find solutions, when we pass by a small book section in the store. None of the titles interested me until I saw one. "Learning Morse Code For Beginners."
"Dad, can I get a book?" I ask. "Sure, but I don't think you'd like any of the books they have here." I grabbed the book off the shelf and showed the book to my dad. Who seemed confused as to why I would want a book like that, until it clicked with him. "You're going to try to communicate with them."
I nodded. "I know you guys want the best for me, and want me to be safe, but I can't let this go. I'm so close to finding them." He nodded. Understanding exactly how I felt. It wasn't uncommon for those who were bound by the string of fate to learn morse code.
"Alright, but do understand. You may know morse code, but they might not. How will you be sure they will get your message??" I didn't think about that, but that wasn't going to steer me away.
"I'll keep trying, they'll have to get the message at some point." I put the book in the cart as we made our way to the front of the store to check out. 'This has to work.'
-Time Skip-
Finally back in the car and on the road. We took the path we did before. There's the school, but the string is gone. "Dammit." "Not there anymore?" "Not there. They must have gotten out while we were at the store." Clearly disappointed, I look at the book in my lap. 'It's worth a shot.' I opened it and started to study. It's really confusing but I know I can get this down. I have taught myself 4 languages. This will be no different, just less.... Language, more dots and dashes. 'This will take awhile.'
—------
"Ok...There." I finished writing down notes. I was already halfway through the book. 'This isn't as bad as I thought it would be.'
"Should I give it a go?" Looking over my notes I decide to say 'Hello.'
I lift my hand up "Here we go." First, I tugged on the string quickly four times, paused, then one short tug again, followed by another short tug, a longer one, then another two short tugs, and finished off with three long tugs. 'Hello.'
"I hope this works.." I waited a little bit to feel any tugging from the string, but nothing came. 'Maybe they didn't understand it... I wonder if I kept on using morse code they might eventually get the hint.' So once again I tugged the sequence for 'Hello.'
No response. I repeated the sequence again but like last time nothing.
"Maybe this was a stupid idea." I look down at the book in my hand. 'I won't give up just yet. I was so close to them before.'
"(Y/n)!" Mom's voice broke my train of thought. 'It must be time for dinner.' I got up to open my door, and when I did I was engulfed in a hug.
"What's up kid?! Have you grown some? You don't wanna be that short forever!"
"Hey Mic, also you saw me last week!" I was finally released from the suffocating hug.
"A week too long! I miss my mini me. Oh what you got there?" I didn't realize I still had my book in my hand. He took it from me before I could answer. "Morse code huh?" He read aloud while he walked down stairs.
"Morse code? Why do you have a book on that? Didn't strike me as a book you'd normally read (Y/n)." Aizawa chimed in after Yamada and I reached the ground floor.
"(Y/n) had a... encounter with her soulmate. Earlier today we left to go to the store, and when we passed a certain school she saw the string of fate coming from one of the windows." Mom set down some papers I assumed were from her and dad's office.
"What school?" Aizawa asked nobody in particular. "UA" Dad said nonchalantly, walking past us.
"UA?!" A new voice joined in. Nemuri walks in the room. She wasn't in her hero uniform, which was rare to see. Maybe she didn't want people to see "Midnight" showing up to a random house.
"Aunt Nemi!" I launched myself at her and gave her a bear hug. I felt her arms hug me back along with her shrieking with joy.
"My my, getting closer to finding your soulmate hmm? What's this about UA now?"
"Well as mom was saying, we were in the car driving past UA, and I felt a tug on the string when I looked up I saw it leading to one of the windows. So while we were at the store I picked up a book on morse code to see if maybe, I don't know... Be able to talk to them and find them." Just talking about the encounter made me feel super giddy inside.
"OH THATS SO CUTE!!! Young love is nothing but adorable!!!" Nemi finally let me go. "Well since they go to UA, maybe I, your lovely Auntie, can help you find them."
"I don't know, I'm very on the fence about her going to that school. I mean it could be dangerous!" Mom started going on her tangent on how "unsafe" it would be.
"Sister dear, I know you're worried about her because she is your only child. But if you keep sheltering her from the world she won't know how to communicate with people in the future. Plus UA is full of heroes, if something were to happen she'd be in safe hands. I personally think she should attend UA to get a better grip on her quirk. She can handle it at the state she is in now, but later on you just can't be sure."
I know mom just wants me to be safe, but I have expressed my want to attend UA for years. But right now, it seemed like she was considering it. "I don't know. Maybe, and I'm saying maybe, I'll consider you visiting the school. After all, our business does help fund the school in some aspects. It would do you some good to get familiar with the place."
"Dear, don't forget. We both attended UA when we were teens." Dad finally cut in. 'That's right, Mom and Dad met at UA. They were in the hero course too.'
"I do understand, but you remember the stuff we saw, how the battles would turn out, the losses we had. I just don't know if that's what I want for her."
"Why don't you let her decide. You and I both know we won't be able to keep her here for her entire life." Mom sighed, and turned her gaze to me.
"I'll have to put some thought into it, but do you really want to go?" I nodded. I haven't seen my mother like this in years. She was always so closed with her emotions, but she couldn't help that. That's how she was raised by her parents.
From what I've been told, Mom used to be cold to others. But when she enrolled into UA she opened up more once she met Dad and Nemuri. The bond she formed with Nemuri was strong, they started to act like sisters hence the reason why I call her Auntie.
"Well, shall we eat? We can discuss the details later."
