The man stood up, and I could see more of him. He looked to be of Chinese descent and very handsome. Of course, that seemed to be the norm around here lately. Shawn, though shy, could have passed for a supermodel. Forget Jasper and Dak, run away with Shawn, my overly tired subconscious suggested. The thought almost made me giggle.
"Chang!" Jasper stepped forward and shook the man's hand. "I was hoping you'd make it."
"How does he know all of these people?" Dak whispered to me, his arms fulls of groceries. I only shrugged. Who knew anything when it came to Jasper?
"I did not know if you could use me," Chang said, smiling.
I almost laughed. We needed all the help we could get. We still had no idea how large this rogue pack was, or when they would be here.
"Everyone, this is Chang Han," Jasper announced.
Chang bowed. "I am pleased to be here."
There was an awkward silence, which Dak broke by saying, "Let's get inside before we all fall asleep standing up." Everyone gratefully surged forward, introducing themselves as they passed the newcomer. I was putting the frozen food into the freezer when I saw Jasper pull Chang aside. I heard the urgent tone of his voice but couldn't make out the question he was asking his friend. Chang spoke louder, I could catch phrases like "been here too long already" and "be watchful". What the hell were they talking about? I was tired of being left on the outside.
I woke up in the morning to an insistent tapping on the broken boards of my door. I mumbled in my sleep and wrapped my pillow securely around my head.
"I forgot about your door. I'll have Shawn fix it; he's very handy with tools." Jasper's voice filled the room.
"Yikes!" I quickly sat up, pulling the blankets around me. "Damnit Jasper, what do you want?" Have I mentioned that I'm not a morning person?
"Time for your motorcycle lessons," he smirked.
"What? Why this early?" I complained, pushing my red hair out of my face.
Jasper glanced at his watch. "It's almost ten in the morning."
"Yeah, and?"
He rolled his eyes. "Meet me out front in fifteen minutes."
I thought about taking a little time to sulk, but fifteen minutes wasn't a lot of time to prepare myself to be in the presence of a sex god.
Dakarai waltzed in as I was putting on my makeup, trying to cover up my darn freckles.
"Please, come in," I said sarcastically as he dropped onto my messy bed.
"King Jasper wishes for thy presence," he informed me.
I smiled at his words. "Is that so?"
Instead of answering, Dak stood and came up behind me. "You like him a lot, don't you?" he murmured.
I was taken aback by his question. But since it was Dak, I figured that I could answer honestly. "Yes," I sighed.
"Why? You're too special to put up with the shit he pulls," Dak growled.
"Believe me, I wish I didn't," I said softly.
Dak was silent for a moment. "Remember, I'm always here for you."
I turned around, a sad smile on my face. "Thanks Dak. If it weren't for you, I would probably go crazy." I hadn't hugged anyone in years, but it felt like the right thing to do. Dak held me in strong arms, and I pressed my face against his hard chest. Surprisingly, it felt.....good. I didn't want to leave, but with one final squeeze, he let me go.
