Danni POV

Everyone was looking afraid and dejected. No-one would ever be prepared for what we had to do now. I stood next to Steve between Natasha and Tony, the few people who've been there for me ever since I've come here. My heart is beating out of my chest and I feel the bile rising up my throat. Natasha takes my hand in hers, giving it an encouraging squeeze.

"See you in a minute," her smile warms up the room, making not only me, but us all feel like maybe this won't be as bad as we're anticipating...

Time skip: Arriving on Vormir

Letting the helmets release back behind our necks, we walk onto the dusty purply grey planes of the planet. The planet is cold and abandoned except for someone standing behind a large stone hedge. We carefully step closer, as if not wanting to disturb the quiet of the deserted planet.

"What you seek lies in front of you... as does what you fear," his last sentence echoes in my head and strikes a chill to run down my spine. I grab Natasha's hand and she squeezes mine reassuringly. "For one of you. For the other..." he stops talking and turns around to face us, the cloak he's wearing doing a good job of covering the horrifying features he has.

"In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love. A soul, for a soul," my breath hitches in the back of my throat and I see Natasha stiffen at his words. His face contorting into a look of joy. "An everlasting exchange," he adds, his voice cracking as he disappears. "We... No," I look at Natasha staring into those emeralds that have kept me captivated since the moment I've arrived here.

Shaking my head I start to cry, I know what's happening, I know what going to happen, I have to stop this. But how? "Hey, look at me, look at me!" Taking my head into her hands she places my forehead against hers, my breathing ragged, panicking, it can't happen like this. She places a kiss to my lips, so softly that I doubt for a second that it was even real. "I love you Danni, nothing will ever change that, but we have to do this. You have to get it back to them," she reaches behind her and takes something before placing it into the secret compartment in the back of my suit. "Look at it when your home, okay?" I shake my head vigorously. "No, Natasha, please, n-no." she frowns before shocking me with one of her stunning bullets.

I rip it off me and run after her. Watching her jump off the cliff, I go after her, grabbing onto her and grappling onto the edge of the cliff. "Natasha please," I beg, her eyes darting to mine then to the bottom of the cliff. "I can't lose you," I feel the tears drip down my cheeks freely as I try to pull her closer to me. It isn't a dream this time, I feel my heart shattering to a million pieces as she squeezes my hand tighter before tears run from those emerald eyes as well.

It was as if I'd knows what she was going to say before she said it, but nothing could've prepared me for the ache that would settle in my chest as she did. "Let go Danni. It has to be this way," a scowl eminent on her features, but sadness lurking in her eyes. The words creep up my throat and I want to stop them, they make this all feel too real. "Stop fighting me Natasha! You have to go back, I can't live without you by my side! They need you, I need you!" I yell and she sighs, looking down to the dark abyss beneath her. A final tear dripping down her cheek as her brave front takes over again.

"Danni, you have to let me go. I love you," she pull herself up with the last of her strength and places a kiss to my lips, however this one feels like goodbye, and I feel every last bit of happiness drain from my body. "It's okay..." her whisper echo's through my head as she kicks against the cliff before falling into the darkness, her hair framing her features as I can only scream as she falls. As she hits the bottom, the crimson liquid that leaks from her head makes me look away, scared to face reality. It just, it can't be.

Time skip: back at Avengers Tower

I return feeling like I've lost a part of me, like there is something missing. Once I land on the platform I can't hold my footing, dropping to my knees and sobbing. It feels like it's the only thing I can do. "Danni?" Clint sounds from behind me, I know him and Natasha are- were best friends. "Danni, where's Nat?" he asks staring at me, raising his brow. "I- I'm so- sorry," is all I manage as I throw the stone to the floor. Standing to my feet and making my way to my room. A hand on my shoulder stops me, a blue-purple robot woman stares at me with guilt-ridden eyes. "I'm sorry," she says looking down.

With the reality hitting me even harder I rush to the room Natasha and I had shared so many moments in and start drinking my thoughts away.

Just one word: sorry.
