New life. New neighbors and new faces. New boxes stacked on top of each other in the empty living room. I turned to face my mother.
"Do I really have to go to school?" I asked with an exasperated voice. I needed time; time to take in that we had just moved across the country to Madison during my last year in high school before college; time to take in that I would have to restart. Again.
"It's best if you get used to it as soon as possible, honey. After all, you'll have to go to school eventually, and you know it." My mom stated, and I couldn't help but agree. Postponing the start would just make things harder, both for me and for her. And I didn't want that.
I sighed and took my backpack from the floor besides me and looked outside through the window; it was raining. I scrunched my nose. The day wasn't starting in a good way.
"Bye, mom!" I said and shot my mother a small smile that she returned, before opening the door to go outside, with the hood of my black sweater over my head.
I walked on the pavement, avoiding the small puddles of water that formed on the way, keeping my head low and looking down. I took out my earphones and plugged them to my cellphone, starting to listen to music.
I had completely ignored and gotten myself numb from my surroundings, not hearing or seeing ahead of me. I was aware that would be a very weird sight, but I couldn't care less; too many thoughts ran through my head.
Suddenly, I felt like I bumped into a wall, and tumbled back, losing my balance and falling on the ground harshly. I groaned as I felt water wet the back of my sweater, making contact with my skin. Great.
"Oh, fuck, I'm so sorry."
I looked up to find the "wall", only to see a blonde, curly haired boy in front of me, with large brown eyes and wearing a college jersey. He looked so worried, as he extended his hand towards me, and I took it, lifting myself up from the ground.
"It's...okay, don't-don't worry about it." I said, brushing it off, or at least trying to. I made eye contact with the boy in front of me, he still looked at me with a frown on his face, glancing around me worried.
"No, it's not okay, you'll catch a cold if you stay like this and it will be my fault. Are you hurt?" He asked with words coming out of his mouth in lightspeed. I couldn't help but smile a little; I hadn't really met many people this kind.
"No, I'm okay. And it's fine, again. I'm going to school after all, it'll be warm there." I reasoned, when the boy's eyes widened at me, and a glint of a smile curled his lips upwards.
"Wait, I'm going to school too. Madison East High School, right?" He asked, his face being a lot more relaxed now. I involuntarily smiled a little too and nodded with a hum, pulling the hood over my head after having fallen off during my fall.
"Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you around." The boy mentioned, furrowing his eyebrows in thought as I nodded again, starting to walk towards the school. If I didn't, I'd be late, and this guy would be late too because of me.
"I moved from San Francisco some days ago with my mom. It's my first day at school here." I explained, and the guy nodded, following my steps. He didn't have a hood over his head, but he didn't seem to be bothered by the droplets falling on his curls.
