Prologue
A boy sits amongst a sea of crusty floor tiles and mumbling adolescence. She sees him too; unlike most things, we agree that he intrigues us. Our feet can barely touch the floor of the cafeteria's slick squares and our scalp is burning from the painful pigtails our mother gave us. We continue to stare at the mysterious boy. Perhaps he is a special boy? Maybe a prince? Or an exchange student? His bright blonde curls stray into his eyes as he munches on his sandwich quietly. His skin is pale, and his limbs are long compared to mine. I kind of wish I could see his eyes, but the way he is sitting, I think only his sandwich has that honor.
I feel the familiar tap on the back of my head.
"Go up to him. If he really is a Prince maybe, we could be a Princess someday. What's the worst that could happen?"
I snap back, "Anything and everything could happen. He could get up and then we would be stuck looking like fools mid-walking, we could trip getting up, Will could pull on our pigtails again.....must I go on?"
She sighs, "Give me the reins and I'll make sure we succeed."
I feel a sharp tug on my scalp, and I whirl on my annoying twin, "Will! Quit it!"
My brother snickers as he takes an obnoxious bite of a carrot, "Stop what, Vicky? I don't know what you're talking about."
I huff hot air, if I was a dragon, I could fry him to a crisp.
"Alas, we are not a dragon."
I roll my eyes and go back to my oozy peanut butter and jelly. I take a sad bite and look up at the royalty table. Only to find the chair empty and the possible prince gone.
Will pushes the back of my head almost straight into my sandwich.
He whispers in my ear, "If you let Vik out more maybe you would actually make friends."
I hear a chuckle in the back of my mind.
"Get rid of those pills while you're at it and then we could have some real fun."
I push up from the table with my hands pressed tight against my ears. My black pigtails swish around my face as I rush into the hallway.
Breathe, just breathe. Do what the doctor said.
I sink down on the floor when I feel a slight tap on my head. I look up through blurry eyes, but these aren't my eyes. I bang against the inside of my eyes like plexiglass. Right now, that's all they are. I watch in the backseat as Vik takes over.
The prince looks down at us with concern, "Are you ok?"
If it were me, I would probably freak out and run away, but Vik isn't me.
She gets us up and brushes off our bright pink skirt, "I'm fine. Thanks for asking. What's your name?"
He smiles a perfect white smile, "I'm Conan. You're Victoria, right?"
I hear Vik scowl, "Please call me Vik."
The ring of the bell causes both our heads to shoot up and a swarm of little elementary kids floods the halls. Conan waves goodbye hastily and Vik settles us against the wall as everyone passes. Will sticks his tongue out as he skips by.
I sigh as I close my eyes.
Vik snickers, "You're welcome scaredy cat."
Chapter one
"Did they change how chips ahoy cookies taste? I swear why can't they leave the classics alone."
I look up from my book and give my brother an annoyed glance.
