Chapter 14
I am breaking a sweat as I reach behind me for the laces of this damn dress. It's stunning, the deep red shimmers in the light like a million stars. It won't matter if I can't get these damn laces.
A faint knock sounds on my door, "Need some help?"
I spin to see Quinn leaning against the doorway. She is already in her dress and looks absolutely stunning. I remember wondering why she is still with Will. She always seemed like an angel and Will was...well Will.
I sigh, "Please before I rip this dress to shreds."
She laughs as she stops behind me. I feel the dress finally begin to tighten.
"There. Gorgeous, Vicky."
I smile as I turn to the mirror. A fitting dress for a funeral. I would be the one to wear red to my death.
"You girls ready?" Will asks from the hall.
Quinn replies with a chipper, "Yes, love!"
She struts into his open arms, and he gives her a sweet kiss on the head. He glances at me.
"You look nice."
His voice holds a somber tone, I flick his lapel, "Cheer up William. This is a celebration for you, if all goes well, you'll finally be rid of me."
He huffs a laugh, "Of course, you'd use prom as your grand exit. Never could do anything small."
"Where's the fun in that?"
I pause as I ask, "Hey can I borrow your phone quickly?"
He raises a brow, "Ummm sure."
He hands it over and heads downstairs. I type in the familiar phone number and take a good five minutes before I tuck the phone into my pocket.
I feel a strange tug inside of me. It feels like a hiccup. I brush it off as the doorbell rings. I rush downstairs and smile as I open the door to Ash, Shane, and Ro.
I usher them in as I hear heavy footsteps. I turn to see John coming into the kitchen with a camera.
Will groans, "You're gone every other time. Why did you have to be here for pictures?"
Quinn pinches Will and he yelps.
Dad rolls his eyes, "I just want to get a few. You kids only get one senior prom. Here squeeze together."
He flashes a few of everyone and I squint at the flash. It feels wrong to be in a family photo. I walk over to him as he snaps a few of Will and Quinn.
"I'm sorry, John. That it's not Vicky in these photos."
He sighs and shows me the few photos, "She'll be happy to see you in them despite her missing out."
My eyes widen as he squeezes my shoulder, "When she comes home."
I nod, promising that hope. I am tugged toward the door by Ro as we wave goodbye.
Will tosses his keys up, "Good thing you all are short. You're going to have to squeeze in the back."
"Remind me again, why are we not taking our own car?"
Ash sighs as she pokes at Will's mustang, "It may be your idiot brother's car, but a mustang is a mustang."
Will mumbles some curses as he opens the door for Quinn. She smiles up at him and kisses him on the cheek.
"Play nice." She whispers.
His shoulders relax as he smiles and shuts the door. I've never noticed before how much she calms him down. Maybe I should have sent Quinn after him the other day; would've saved me from Conan's bleeding heart. The girls and I squeeze into the back seat, Ro practically on Ash's lap.
