Chapter 2

After the bio test, I have English and then lunch. I tap my pencil nervously as I sit at our usual lunch spot at the top of the raised area. I keep expecting to hear Vik at every turn, but she has stayed silent since the bathroom. The usual hum of the lunchroom adds some much-needed comfort as I see Astrid and Ro make their way over. I smile as Ro now has Ash's sweater on from this morning. More often than not, one of them will take the other's clothes throughout the day. Ash plops down next to me and Ro next to her.

Ash drops her forehead to the table, "I can't do one more month of this. If that bio test is anything like the final I am going to die."

I grab Ash's phone from her pocket and tap in her passcode.

"What are you doing?"

I tap our grade book, "The test was three periods ago and it was a scantron. The grades are defiantly up."

Ro jumps up to look over my shoulder, "I got an eighty-five. If you get higher than a ninety you have to buy me a cookie."

Shane's voice comes from behind, "I'll get in on that bet. I could use a cookie."

Ash throws her hands up, "I'm not made of money!"

Ro gives her a long glare, "The cookies are a buck each, chill man. Also, you're the only one with a job."

I take a deep breath for Ash and log into her account, Ro begins cackling and Shane just hums in victory.

I turn the phone to her, "Ninety-two, love. Go get us cookies."

Ash looks at us dumbfounded, "I literally just studied this morning..."

Ro claps, "Just for that comment make mine two cookies."

Ash rolls her eyes but smiles as she gets online at the snack bar.

Ro sighs as her eyes follow her, "When will she start having faith in herself," She turns to us, "and I'm not just talking about bio tests."

"I know, but that's why she has us for now."

Ash saunters back and hands out the cookies, "There, my debt is paid."

"For now." I giggle.

Shane leans into me more, "Hey, Ro told us about the pills this morning. Are you doing ok?"

I give Ro a why look.

"Sorry," She says, "I felt like they should know. This isn't something we should take lightly. If you need us, we are here for you Vicky."
I sigh, "I know. I appreciate it guys, but really, it was just one hiccup. I have it under control now."

They give me not-quite-convinced faces so I change the subject, "My dad left again this weekend, so we can hang out before the game on Saturday."

"What about your mom?" Ash asks.

"Her nurse will be there this weekend. She doesn't need us crowding her."

Ro slams her hands down, "It's settled we need to take you shopping, Vicky. This is Conan you are going to cheer on; we gotta make you look not like a cute mom. Not that I don't love your style."

I rub my hands over my face, "Subtle Ro. Thanks."

I feel a hand on my head, and I look up to see Will messing up my hair. I swat at him like a fly.

"Ugh, what are you doing here?"

He shrugs, "Skipping gym obviously."

I laugh, "Don't you have like a fifty in gym?"
