Avery Montgomery pushed past everyone in the crowded break room. She made her way into her brothers office, where he sat there staring at his computer. "Murder. 10th street. It was Adams again, I know it." she blurts.
Her brother, Grayson Montgomery looked up from his computer, "Avery...something is still going on there, look." he says turning his computer screen to face her. She narrowed her eyes on it. Someone was live streaming the police outside a building on 10th street.
"Come on, let's go." she demanded, rushing out the door, with her brother following behind.
She walked right past their boss, Tyler. Who has been obsessing over Avery since she started working there. The weird part about it was, how much older he was then her. Avery was the youngest detective there, only being 22. Tyler and Grayson were the same age...29. The problem was the two were very close, so Avery never had the heart to tell her own brother how creepy his friend was being towards her, "where are you two going?!" he yells as they rushed past them.
They both ignored Tyler's voiced and made their way outside to the car, quickly driving to crime seen.
The moment they got out of the car, people's eyes shifted towards them. The Montgomery detectives were the most famous detectives in the city. All gangs, mafias, and criminals knew their name.
"Cal, what's going on here!" Grayson asked one of his friends who was a cop.
"I have no clue, only that there's a shooter inside." He answered.
"Could it involve Kade Adams and his group?" Avery asks, staring at the building.
Cal shakes his head, "as much as we try to stay away from the mafias...this has Kade Adams written all over it."
The two siblings looked at one another. Avery knew it. She's always right when it comes to Kade Adams and his crimes. Actually, she's just normally right about everything. That's why she was the only person to notice the small red dot on the building until it quickly disappeared.
A red dot always meant one thing. A snipper was in another building, "Gray. I'll be right back." Avery told her brother.
She turned the other way and walked down the street, where the parking garage was. It would be the perfect spot to snip from. Especially because no one uses the higher levels of the garage. It only took her a couple minutes to get up there but when she finally did....she saw someone in the distance.
A man.
With a gun.
She walked as quietly as she could, pulling out her gun. He was facing the building on 10th, pointing right towards a person inside the building, "sneaking up on me doesn't work, love." the man's voice sudden rings through her ears as he suddenly is turning around and putting a knife to her throat. Avery struggled to get lose from his grip. She was pushed against the wall, feeling the pressure of the knife slowly getting harder and harder on her skin. "Ah....you're a Montgomery."
His expression was cold.
"And who are you." Avery bluntly asked.
"Just someone who needs to finish a job." he answered, "without a detective in my way." he muttered, shoving her to the ground. Without thinking, Avery tried to grab his knife from him, but he was too quick. "I was going to be nice...but I guess not," he says taking the knife and stabbing her in the leg with it.
She let a cry of pain, "you asshole" she groaned.
"Don't move until I'm done with my job...and maybe I'll help you with that knife situation you got going there," he sarcastically joked, walking back to his spot.
Avery watched as he set up the gun, slowly moving his finger to the trigger.
"Who is in there that you want dead so badly?" Avery questioned.
The man keep his eye on the building through the scope on the gun, "A man who helped kidnapped my brother." he answered.
"Why kill him? Don't you need to get information from him first?"
His head slowly turned, staring at the girl sitting the floor, with a knife in her leg. "he doesn't know shit. Only the man who actually kidnapped him does."
"Who."
"Can you just shut up?" he groaned.
"No, not until you get this god damn knife out of my leg!" Avery finally snapped.
The man groaned, setting up for his shot again. Avery watched closely has he took a deep breath in and then out, pulling the trigger. There was no noise. Just screaming from inside and outside the building. A man was dead...and Avery just watched the man who did it.
He packed up his stuff into a case and finally looked back over at Avery who was now turning white, "oh, shit." He mumbled, rushing towards her.
"You're an asshole,"
"Yeah. I know." he laughs, pulling the knife out. Avery cried in pain again. He quickly wrapped a piece of cloth around her leg and tightened it.
While he was doing that, she was staring at him. Avery noticed the tattoo on his wrist....it was a symbol she recognized.
"You're an Escarra." she breathed out in shock.
"In the flesh." he sighed, tightening the cloth more so the bleeding would stop. He got up from his knees, looking down at her, "have fun with goose chase for Kade Adams. You'll never find him."
Avery's eyes widened, "how did you know I'm after him?"
"Because I'm not stupid."
The man left Avery sitting on the top floor of a parking garage. He was an Escarra. Of course he would do that. All Avery knew about them was...they were cold, and there were 4 of them. Youngest to Oldest was, Jackson, Ethan, Jameson, Alexander. And their father...was the worst man ever to exist.
