List of Characters

Lan He - Main character (MC) of the novel. He is a good-looking young man with typical Asian features. A budding talent in the acting industry, with a proficiency in the traditional practices of Chinese ancestor worship due to his family background. After being forcefully recruited as an Impermanence, he chose the words "来都来了lai dou lai le" which means "since I'm already here", to be written on his hat.

Family members:

Grandfather - Name currently unknown. He was a clothing tailor and opened a paper banner shop selling goods for the dead. He imparted the MC with his knowledge and skills in burial rites, folding joss paper ingots, etc.

Parents - Names currently unknown. They were primary school teachers.

Aunt - Name currently unknown. She was a kindergarten teacher.

Close friends:

Cheng Haidong - A photographer that the MC met while filming a TV series in Chapter 1. Shows up consistently in later chapters. He is a somewhat superstitious person with a tendency to exaggerate events.

Love interest(?):

Song Futan - A cold, handsome man with black eyes. He has the pen name "Xuan Guang" aka Suspended Light. The son of Song Qiyun. It was implied that his soul often leaves his body and wanders to the Netherworld.

Acquaintances/Cameo appearances:

Song Qinmin - The old man who died in the village in Chapter 1. He became a ghost and haunted his own residence because his family were cheapskates who did not offer him proper money for the afterlife.

Little Red - A vicious female ghost wearing red clothes who was tricked and captured by MC.

Little Green - A vicious female ghost wearing green clothes who was tricked and captured by MC.

Ying Shao - MC's neighbour who was a Gu master. He was beaten up by Little Red and Little Green, and saved by the MC.

Miss Hu - An emissary taking care of the children at Puji Temple. A beautiful maiden that looks peculiar when she smiles.

Meng Qing - A Sichuan Chinese opera actress who played as the female ghost, Jiao Guiying, in <Love Detective>.

Li Chuan - A Sichuan Chinese opera actress who played as the male lead, Wang Kui, in <Love Detective>.

Song Qiyun - A famous director in the entertainment industry, father to Song Futan.

Priest Bu Dong - A venerable person who gave Song Futan his rosary.

Si Kong - Disciple of Priest Bu Dong

Dou Chunting - Song Futan's male younger cousin who seems a little foolish.

Entertainment industry:

Wang Mao - The director for the idol drama <Geometry of a Clear Dream>, which Lan He auditioned for in Chapter 3.

Maomao - Director Wang's female assistant. She acted against the MC in his audition and was shocked by his portrayal of his character.

Liu Chunyang - A famous director who directed the drama <The Chase> and hand-picked the MC as a male villain in the show.

Chen Xingyang - A veteran actor who went to the same school as the MC and was picked to be the male main lead of <The Chase>.

MC's Netherworld colleagues (read: kids):

Old Bai - One of the Netherworld officials, whose role model is Bai Wuchang of the Chinese legends. The characters inscribed on his hat, "一见生才yi jian sheng cai", means "harbinger of talent". He is very greedy, and often asks the MC for money.

Yan San - A Netherworld official, working for a different boss from Old Bai, who accepted a bribe from Old Bai to help the MC. Called the MC "Little Lai".
