It had been two months on from my 3rd birthday at the time I got taken away from my mother, little did I know that would be the last time I would see her for 6 years. The ever lasting image of a drunken mother on the sofa in the living room with me in the room next door would remain with me to this very day.
When it happened my mother was drunk from the night previous, and I was left alone in the cold dark bedroom, left to fight for myself. I was picked up by a police man and was given my teddy bear. My mother shouting from the room behind. "Don't take my baby" "I'll stop drinking" "Please don't take her from me" "I'll do anything, she is my life, she is the only thing keeping me alive"
But even with all the kicking and screaming from her the police man did not move and door keeping us apart stayed shut. The last cry's from her remained with me for all of my childhood, the last cries to keep her sane and keep up her fight with depression and not to mention the old friend alcoholism.
As I was put in the back on the police car and we started to drive away those words were flashing through my head. And as a 3 year old I hadn't a clue what was happening. The police car drove me to the train station where there I was met by my Aunt Courtney and Uncle Henry and they accompanied on the journey of my life. My life away from my mother. My life away from everything I had ever known.
As the smoke from the train started to reduce and the train started to become slower, even as a 3 year old, I knew we arrived at my destination. My Aunt carried me out of the train carriage to where my distinctive grandparents were standing. She whispered to them, words I could not yet understand and now I wish I could. Minutes later she had got back on the train and my grandparents waved my Aunt and Uncle away as the train began to pull away from the old Victorian station. After my grandparents started to walk away with my grandfather carrying me in his right arm, as we got to the car he put me into the back of their car and we drove away. Little did I know that drive to my new home would change my life forever.
