I was expecting that the base would be some kind of a twenty-floor building like the ones we were seeing in movies. But that was totally not the case. The base was a two-floor house with a high gate made of silver. The walls of the outside were stoned and there were no windows or balconies. The front yard was empty. There was no one out there.
There wasn't, until Jayden approached the gate and pressed a small, red button. When he cocked his head at me, I realized I was still in the car, just absorbing the way the entire place looked like. I pushed the door open and walked out of the car, shutting the door behind me. I walked towards him as I plunged my hands in my back pockets. He fixed his eyes on where my hands were now and rolled back his eyes.
"What?" I questioned, ignoring the blush that was heating my cheeks. My attention was caught by the black man who opened the doors of the gate and appeared between us.
He titled his head up at me to Jayden, like he was asking for something. A permission, perhaps. Jayden raised a hand and made an assuring face. Still, he looked serious. Than man with the gun in his hands, had big blue eyes and short black hair. He didn't have any tattoos. At least not any that were covering his hands. They were bare in front of my eyes.
"This is Sofia Kane." He said, taking a step forward. The man had brown skin that was making him look huge. With the flat chest and muscular forearms and everything. Jayden was just a white boy with sandy blond hair and toned arms.
Wow. I really shouldn't had read poetry during our ride to Bloodline.
"Let us in." Jayden said. No. He ordered. He sounded demanding. Without realizing it, I took a step back and brought my hands in front of me. The man shook his head and moved aside, making enough place for both of us to walk in.
Jayden moved first, passing by the man. I glanced around me, searching for someone from the pack who happened to be outside. I didn't like that I was with Jayden. Just like I'd had mentioned before, I wasn't afraid of him. But we were in a place where his people were. All of them. And I was on my own. I didn't know them, so there was no way I was going to trust them so easily. But most importantly, there was no way in hell I was trusting him.
My phone started vibrating and I suspiciously pulled it out of my jacket's pocket. I frowned when I saw the name I wasn't expecting to get a call from, on the top of the screen. I picked it up without hesitation.
"Hello, Sofia." He immediately said in a light tone. I smiled as I felt all the guilt leaving my shoulders.
"Chase," I breathed. "Hi. It's... It's so nice to hearing from you again. You can't imagine how I'm feeling right now."
"I think I can." That made me giggle. "I tried calling you thousands of times, but you didn't respond or called back since you left. So, I tried again and it seemed like I got lucky."
"Oh, yeah. I couldn't really find the time to spend even a moment with my phone. I was very busy whenever I was Sarah. Sorry for not seeing your calls."
"That's okay, love. I just wanted to check up on you. I was worried for you." I clenched my fists together and bit the inside of my cheek, till I tasted blood at the tip of my tongue. The guilt slowly started getting back inside me.
"Thank you. I'll try to be calling more often from now on. I promise." I wasn't sure if I was going to keep that promise. I plunged my fingernails into the skin of my palm and gritted my teeth together when I felt a sudden pain. I had left bloody marks on the spots I had pressed my nails.
"How come did you find time to answer my call?" He asked in a low voice. The question sounded offensive, but I didn't have time to think about it while my emotions were eating me alive.
