Reality drifted in and out of focus as I slept in. I didn't want to deal with the day yet. I didn't want to contact the Morning Star. I definitely didn't want to explain that the Royal Family was in hiding and the Secret Garden was not a secret entrance. It was exhausting, trying to prove that I did not need to be bailed out... Surely some of the others would miss me. The one-eyed thief, the bankrupt aristocrat... maybe even Kleptocrow. It must feel a little sad... with me being in such a dangerous place alone... although this mirror doesn't steal my stuff like Kleptocrow does...
"What is that?" Kleptocrow never said that. I snapped awake. Lukas was standing in the doorway. "Sorry, I thought that you would be awake by now. May I ask what that is?"
I grumbled and rolled over before trying to muffle a surprised gasp. How did this get here? I could have sworn it was hidden. In front of me was the magic mirror. It was on the floor, and so was I, in a big bundle of blankets that I had dragged off the bed in my sleep.
Lukas was still waiting for an answer, so I had to make up a quick lie, "It's a magic mirror."
"Magic?"
I had to suppress my urge to hide it under my pillow and run away.
I held it up. "Yes, there is a saying that if you touch a mirror, and there isn't a gap between your finger and the mirror, then it's a portal."
Lukas stretched his finger to the mirror, about to touch it.
"RAWR!" I leaped at him, waving the mirror around, "I'm an evil being from another dimension! RAWR!"
He jerked his hand back, before laughing with me, "I can't believe I fell for that."
"The magic mirror is a classic."
"Anyway, are you ready to bake?"
"Bake?"
"You did promise to make cookies with me."
"When... when did I promise that?"
"Yesterday, about an hour before you found that drago..." He scratched the back of his neck then sighed, "Sorry, that must have been a dream."
"I've got no plans this morning, do you want to make cookies anyway?"
"Do I?" He beamed, looking like a kid on Christmas, "I'll meet you in the kitchen in an hour."
Lukas sprinted out of the room, the slam of the door barely waking me up before I drifted back off to sleep.
An hour later, I was in the kitchen, wearing a simple knee-length dress and a polka-dot apron.
"I never apologized for shooting you the other day."
"It's ok. The arrow didn't go through my armor. Although, my parents won't let me go to the next event."
"I still have no idea how I wasn't disqualified the first time. What is the next one, knife throwing or something?"
"I don't know. Moustaccio, our Crown Crier, has been having a bit of a tough week, so he's going to choose the event."
"I hope Moustaccio feels better. I haven't seen him around lately, or any of the royalty for that matter. I'd like to meet the prince at least."
"Why?"
"I... I find it ridiculous that whoever wins won't know who they're marrying. The royalty have to be really terrible to hide from the future queen."
"They're probably hiding until the assassin drama goes away." He held up a bowlful of flour, "Does this smell funny to you?"
