"CODE RED! CODE RED! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! THE INFECTION AT THE HOSPITAL HAS ESCAPED! CRAZED PEOPLE ARE WONDERING IN THE OPEN! STAY IN YOUR HOUSE AND DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE GO OUTSIDE!"
Riley woke up with a jump.
"There have been reports of a safe house in London that hasn't been overrun by these people yet. If you want to be anywhere I recommended you hea..." The radio cut out, replaced by static.
"Dammit, I fell asleep again!" She mumbled.
She leaned over to her phone to check the time. 2:00AM.
"What the... 2:00AM! What's going on?" She said.
Riley got out of bed and headed over to the window. The whole town seemed to be ignited in an assortment of yellows and oranges. The hospital was on fire and flames were spreading quickly.
Riley grabbed her phone and called Kayla. It rang four times before the annoying voicemail said:
"Your call has been disconnected please try again later,"
"Damn it Kayla! Why do you never pick up?" Riley yelled at her phone before slamming it down on the table, "Out of all the times you don't pick up it had to be this this time!" She ran over to her wardrobe, pulled out a pair of jeans, a T-Shirt, a pair of socks, her hoodie and a pair of trainers and quickly put them on. She then pulled out a rucksack and packed a few spare tops, jeans, socks and another hoodie as well as the sandwiches and crisps she had hidden in her bedroom.
Riley ran out of her bedroom and down the stairs. She flung the door open and ran out into the cold night, her feet splashing in puddles that reflected the moon perfectly almost as if they were lighting her way. It was one of those nights where there were no stars in the sky but you knew they were there. Just like hope, even if you couldn't see it, yet.
"She better be at her home," Riley mumbled.
BANG!
Riley looked around the street, trying to find the source of the noise.
"That's the hospital," Riley said.
She continued walking towards Kayla's house, her speed quickening as the orange glow crept closer.
Kayla's house was only a few metres away now. Riley could see her house, the lights were out and the windows were smashed. She walked towards the door and slowly pushed it open.
"Kayla? Kayla where are you?" Riley called.
"Riley! What's happening? Why is the hospital on fire?" Kayla asked coming out of the bathroom, "Melody, you can come out. Its just Riley,"
Kayla leaned back into the bathroom and then came back out with Melody.
"What is going on? Why are you here in the middle of the night?" Melody yelled as she came out, both girls wearing jeans and a hoodie.
"Haven't you heard it," Riley questioned.
She turned to look at her friends. A confused look on each of their faces.
"The Radio!" Riley screamed.
Melody ran over to the radio and turned it on, just to hear static.
"There's nothing!" She called.
"Oh! I thought it was just my radio but it looks like they've cut all the electricity off! The hospital was overrun by the people with that disease!" Riley replied.
"So... It's basically the Zombie Apocalypse," Kayla shortly followed with.
"Yeah," Riley said, "Look there's this safe house in London that we could head to. I was going to go there with some people but they told me to go home. Treating my like I was a little five year old who couldn't look after herself!"
"Why can't we stay here with our parents?" Melody yelled.
""Well I have a feeling the broken doors weren't from the people inside trying to get out... but from people outside trying to get in!" Riley said.
"Well I want to stay here!" Kayla yelled.
"Fine! If your not coming can I just say one thing?" Riley asked looking at the two girls nodding before mustering the deepest voice she could and the widest smirk ever, "Come with me if you want to live!"
The girls didn't know what it was about that last remark but they felt oddly persuaded to go with their friend. After about thirty seconds the final answer was agreed by the two girls at the bathroom door. Both girls turned their heads and looked at their friend on the concrete pavement and said:
"We'll pack our bags and be down in five!" Melody yelled as the two girls turned and went upstairs to be down a few minutes later, "And hide behind the bushes so you don't get seen!"
A few minutes later the three girls walked out of the house and started heading towards Maya's house.
"So this 'Zombie Apocalypse'... Should we be worried?" Melody asked.
"Worried, yes! We do! Unless you want to get bitten and turned into a zombie I'd be worried and I'd use that worry to keep yourself alive!" Riley replied.
"We need weapons!" Kayla yelled as Riley and Melody started to glare daggers at each other.
"Look! Maya's house is just there. We can get knives from there!" Riley shouted as she started running towards the house.
"Riley! Riley! Wait up!" Kayla yelled as she followed Riley.
Maya came running out of the house in her joggers and favourite hoodie.
"Guys! You shouldn't be out here have you not seen the news! They say you shouldn't be walking out on the streets!" Maya complained.
"Who cares what the news says! We're going to get knives, get Alexia and then run away!" Melody said coming up behind Riley and Kayla.
"You've changed your mood!" Kayla said.
"Come on Alexia's house is just round the corner, lets go get her!" Riley yelled.
"Why are you coming to get me?" The four girls turned around to find Alexia standing behind them dressed for a run in her joggers and sweatshirt.
"We're going on the run, to escape from the infected!" Melody yelled, sounding far to enthusiastic.
"Something tells me that no matter how far away we run the infected will still find us!" Riley said.
"Way to be optimistic!" Maya stated as she rolled her eyes.
"Riley, be more optimistic. Maya, how many knives do you have in your house?" Kayla asked.
"Are we referring to them as The Infected now then?" Melody asked.
"I guess so," Kayla replied.
"I have enough knives for us to each have one," Maya answered.
"Good. Go get them," Melody said.
"Your not the one who can give the orders! I think I should be the one giving the orders!" Kayla yelled.
"Great! Will be dead by sunrise!" Riley mumbled.
"No we won't. I'm a brilliant leader!" Kayla said.
"No your not! Do you not remember the camping trip that you lead?" Melody asked.
"What camping trip?" Kayla replied.
"The one where you lead a bear to our camp!" Maya said coming out of her house with the knives.
"I still have nightmares about it," Alexia mumbled.
"You guys spend way much time dwelling on the past!" Kayla said as the four girls started to argue.
"Look. How about we don't have a leader. We'll probably have less fights that way!" Riley yelled over the arguing teenagers.
"Your right. Lets go we should at least start heading in the opposite direction to the hospital maybe if we run quick enough we might find a place where we won't get turned into one of them," Maya said as she gave a knife to each of the girls.
Once each of the girls had a knife they turned round and headed south.
