A E R A
— ❦ —
Aera wasn't born to stay still and silent, she was a force of nature, made to break the rules and shake the world. Her mother had told her how she had been the hardest to deliver, how she twisted and turned to escape her womb, and she found it to be fitting for their relationship. Their differences made it impossible for them to get along, while her mother was the definition of calm and docility, she was explosive and brazen. Since her birth, there hadn't been one dull day in the Red Keep, her presence and mischiefs constantly entertained the folks at court.
The only thing that could make her stay in place were her studies, not the boring one about the geography of Westeros, but everything that was related to her Targaryen ancestry got her full attention. Whether it was the traditions and customs of their house, the history of their ancestors, or the High-Valyrian that she mastered perfectly. It made her feel more worthy of her name, as if she had to master all their culture to prove that she was a real dragon.
Today was different, it was a special day, too important for her to be running around in the corridors of the castle, at least according to her mother. She would have preferred to be anywhere but here, yet here she was, scrunching her nose in disgust while the heir to the throne was giving birth to another bastard — although it was quite ironic for her to mock the legitimacy of her children when hers was frequently questioned. Her mother had insisted for their presence here, even if it wasn't their roles to assist her during this very long and boring process.
« Keep pushing princess ! The child is coming, I can already see the head. » One of the maid said hurriedly, but the screams of Rhaenyra cut her immediately after her sentence.
What was happening in front of her was very unappealing, Aera was sure that the suffering Rhaenyra went through today would forever be engraved in her mind. Watching the birth comforted her in the idea that she didn't wish to conceive children, however, she wasn't stupid. She knew that, sooner or later, it would be her turn, whether she wanted it or not. She already had a betrothed, one of her cousin, who had once been the suitor of the princess, but she would rather die than give birth to one of his child. He wasn't meant for her, and she didn't think that because of their age difference. Aera was sure that he would bore her to death if she had to spend more than a day in his company.
Aera didn't wish for this life, she didn't want to spend her time locked in a castle, while being forced to squeeze heirs out of her body. She loved Helaena more than anything, but she knew that she couldn't spend her whole life in the Red Keep, staying idly by her side as her lady-in-waiting, until it would be their time to open their legs and suffer the same fate that every woman before them suffered. Deep down, she knew that she was destined for much more, and she was ready to do anything to have the life that she deserved.
If she had a dragon, she would've fled away from this place a long time ago with Helaena by her side, maybe she would've also taken Aegon with them, if he had promised beforehand to hold his tongue during the travel. Together, they would fly to Volantis, where they would find her father and grandmother, and stay by their sides for the rest of their lives. Aera knew that her father would never force her to marry anyone, and in his letters, he always described Volantis as being the most beautiful place in the world. This was the life she wanted for her friends, one where they could spend their time eating cake and playing games that only them could understand.
