I walked in friend and umbrella the only armor against the legions of people staring spitefully; I entered as a joke and to just show others that bullies are wrong. Right now though I felt beyond self conscious, a crop top from a vintage shop, black super skinny waist high jean, slightly scuffed boots and a twenty year old jacket.
A young woman the only woman smiling to the two of us, directed us to the connecting room and greeted the next person. The room heaved with apparent copies of the same person, a slight difference in height, hair colour and tie dye variation. I was inches taller than every woman in there, many gave me the same glare I received in the previous room; my friend knocked my shoulder winking.
"Hi, name?" I gave my name but felt my mouth grow numb as she proceeded to tell me my name wasn't there, "It's fine, I'll just write you in." I smiled feeling my cheeks burn.
"Wow, any old person could just walk in really. It'd be awkward if they told you to leave, wouldn't it?" I looked down to my friend rolling my eyes, her attempt to lighten my mood failed as I led her to a table to fill in information and pour a coffee.
The long wait of thirty minute, it doesn't seem nervous but when you're filled with a room full of people scowling at you and parents eyeing you as if you'd be good with a bullet in your chest, lets just say it was an anxiety filled experience. "Do you think I even stand a chance? I mean look at these people." I stared at my hand as it shook my second coffee lapping up the sides, my friend held the information pack and umbrella but her scoff made me laugh.
"I don't see anyone beautiful here but you, I know I'm your friend but these people all look the same." I smiled feeling a little more confident, we were directed to a queue before I threw my cup away. My hands shook openly making my friend smile, a tall man walked over smiling and took my form leading me to a sofa. My friend moved off but watched me sit and answer questions a camera pointing at me as I laughed and smiled with the man.
"Hey, just hold up the form and we'll take a little picture and then drop the form and smile Hun." I nodded but felt my face quake as I smiled, I walked from one spot to the next leaving my form. "We'll take as many as is need for you to be happy, the hair is killing it. It's awesome." I kicked my foot up winking that I was fabulous, I realised what I had done and mentally slapped myself but looked over to see my friend with a raised eyebrow. I smiled as more pictures were taken. "There you go Hun, the hair kills it!" I smiled as he showed me. I grabbed my form handing to the woman before while my friend laughed at the fact I'd called myself fabulous. The woman smiled filing my form away.
"There you go, we might see you later in the month, thanks for entering the Ratchet Face of SS15 competition."
