"I'm so proud of you, ghost girl!" Lily cheered when she saw all of my assignments from the beginning of school completed. "You're lucky none of these lazy teachers care about late work."
"Yeah, that's for sure," I replied as I stood up to turn everything in. I was going to wait until class was over, but I was starting to blush, and I didn't want her to see. I tried telling myself it was because she complimented me, but it was definitely because she called me ghost girl. It was so cute whenever she called me that.
Jay claimed that I had a crush on her, and I was beginning to think he was right. Every time she got a hard math question correct, I would smile to myself because I admired how smart she was. I genuinely listened to everything she said, and I wished we had more classes together.
All of that cheesy nonsense was so confusing since I'd never had a crush on a girl before. I wouldn't have guessed I was bisexual, but there I was, constantly thinking about Lily.
I must've walked back to my seat without realizing it, because next thing I know, Lily was asking me, "What are you thinking about? You're spacing out again."
"You," I blurted out just to see how she'd react.
She was flustered at first but decided to play along. "Anything dirty?"
"Very," I replied with a smirk.
She giggled a little, then we both went back to our work, which we were assigned to do together. "Did you finish number six? I got two and nine done so far."
"Yeah, but it's probably wrong," I admitted.
She leaned in close so she could check the work on my paper. It's like I could see the gears in her brain turn as she quickly looked over how I solved it. "It's right."
I chuckled and said, "It took me twice as long as you to do it. I wish we had English class together because that's actually something I'm good at."
She was about to say something, but got completely distracted. "I like your socks!" Her voice was raised, yet it was still hard to hear since the whole class was talking.
I looked down at my feet so I could remember what socks I wore that day. They were black with green chickens plastered all over them. They didn't match my old jeans and dark purple T-shirt at all. I laughed out loud, thinking about how she was visibly more comfortable around me. "That's an odd thing to compliment considering how stupid my socks look, but thank you."
She smiled and mentioned, "Chickens are my favorite animal, so of course I love your socks. I hope I can own a bunch of chickens one day."
"You do you, I guess. Any type of bird terrifies me," I confessed. "I think these are socks Izzy picked out for me."
"Sam, why are you screaming? It's just a cute little birdie."
"It's a demon creature with feathers!"
"I'll protect you."
"I'm supposed to protect- Wait, it's coming closer to me!"
"You're silly. Hold my hand. That's what you and Leo do when I'm scared of something."
"Okay."
"You're so fearless. I can't believe you're afraid of birds," she joked.
Just then, I felt a pencil tapping against my shoulder. "Hey, Sam. What did you get for number two?"
Vinnie and his partner, Oliver, waited for an answer that I didn't figure out, so I asked Lily, "You solved that one, right?"
"No," she replied in a weirdly quiet tone.
