It's as if I'm on a ship in the mist of a storm as i continue rolling around in my bed for what feels like hours. Her soft snores make me want to vomit, worse then any sea sickness I ever felt. The sounds filling up the room like wave slowly forming into a tsunami. It's so bizarre having a stranger sleep next to me. Invading my privacy and now my mind. How could they just send another maid as if she were that replaceable, like damaged furniture?
I try to pretend the soft snores are Lia's but my tired mind can't let the fact that she's never coming back slip away. There's no way she's dead. My mind wouldn't make sense of it. Not til I saw her body. Not until her ashes went back to Niran. Her tear stained face still plastered in my memory.
What happened after she ran away?
Was I the reason she jumped?
Is it because of what I said to her?
I begin to contemplate what would have happened if I had stopped her from running away.
Who did she see out there afterwards?
Did someone push her?
These questions seem to crash into me with the weight of a thousand waves.
I don't know how long time has past as I lay there letting these rapid thoughts begin to drown me. I knew I couldn't stay here without at least looking for answers. I knew the only place to find answers was behind these vary walls.
I knew that without trying I wouldn't be able to sleep, eat, or breathe right again.
The soft fire nestled in the fireplace is the only light in my room.
Without any further thought I sit up as quietly as possible fearing my movements might wake her in a silent room. The wooden floors creek against the weight of my wobbly sea legs. Haven't never done this before my body feels as if it's being poked with a thousand needles at the thought of breaking the law. As open my wardrobe The sounds of the furniture creaking open in a silent room causes my heart to stop. Still hearing her breathes I wrap my velvet red cloak around me. I take out the pair of hunting boots I haven't seen in months. I wasn't going bare foot tonight. I search the lining of the inside of the boots looking for the knife I took from the convent.
I finally felt the metal trimming. As I slip it out its pocket. The white bone shining beneath the fire's flickers. This knife alone would be treason.
Women aren't supposed to have weapons of any kind.
I get up to walk to the hidden door I now knew is there. I push at the wooden panel. I hold my breath as I hear her suddenly skip a breathe. looking back to see her frame begin to move beneath the blanket. My palms begin to sweat as hold my breath hoping she doesn't move any further. My mind begins to think of things I could say as an excuse to be fully clothes at this hour. Then I let out a breathe as her snores begin again. I take let go a huge sigh of relief.
I make sure the sounds of my new maids breath dont waver at all as I open the door wider. I step in without
Hesitation . Engulf myself into complete darkness. I shiver from the sudden lack of warmth. I begin to shiver as my body settles into the darkeness. The tunnels are like a dark empty void. It seems as if there's no beginning and no ending. I could scream and no one would ever hear me.I begin to feel myself panic. This was different than following Lia the night before. I was completely alone. I didn't contemplate how scared I would be alone.
The only thing I was more afraid of was never knowing the truth. I knew I could live with that. Lia's hurt eyes seem to chase me as I walk quickly down the tunnels til I reach the end.
