My heart was in my throat as my fingers fidget to unseal the 'letter of destiny' as Leon liked to call it. I'm a little nervous today, especially since it's the day of choosing. I'm finally going to know what school I'll be ending up in.
Who knows? They might've forgotten the fact that I accidentally set someone on fire. It was purely an accident, I swear. Okay, maybe I was a little bit conscious of the fact that I set the little prima-donna on fire. She called me a midget. Well, I guess I feel guilty about it. I don't think the feeling will be wearing off any time soon.
My family comes from an old lineage of witches, one of the proud founding families involved in the Union of Supernaturals. We sound like big shots, huh? We represent the lineage of witches, well, my brother Athens Ambrose does, ever since our parents died. I'm a little scared that I might stain their dignity.
I can still remember their disappointed faces when my brother Leon didn't meet their expectations. To be honest, I don't want to end up like Leon. His power was so strong and uncontrollable that our parents had to sacrifice themselves to seal it. He can barely do any magic now.
He smiles like he did before, but I doubt he's happy. He keeps reminding me not to be like him. I'm afraid that I probably am.
This letter will decide whether I'll take Athens' or Leon's footsteps. With cold hands, I decided to just rip it open. I saw the seal marked with the logo of S.I.F.D.S and my face fell. I knew it. I knew I would be a disappointment. How will I tell Athens now?
"Freya?" I heard Leon call out when he came into the room. Once he found me he saw my devastated face. He looked at me, with a concerned expression. "What's with the long face? You-", he stopped himself. He probably read my mind. "I'm sure he'll understand".
"I know he would but... I'm just disappointed with myself," I tossed the letter away from me, like it was a poisonous snake trying to kill me. Actually it did kill me a little.
"Geez, cheer up! It's not that bad, it's my school. So," Leon frowned, wiping flour powder on his pants. "Gimme the letter." he extended his hand.
I looked at him. "I can't, it's on the floor."
He squinted his eyes at me, "I'm your older brother and I demand-"
"I'll tell Athens you accidentally summoned a demon again".
"Okay! I'll pick it up. Lazy ass", he huffed and then grunted as he bent down.
He started to read the letter aloud.
"I hereby announce that Freya Ambrose, from the house of sacred witches, will undergo studies in Special Institute For Delinquent Supernaturals. She will attend classes at the beginning of the starting semester-"
"I'm sorry, what?"
We both turned. Athens was there at the door, with a stern look on his face. I froze, and Leon stared at him, paralyzed. He looked at us both, failing to hide the disappointment evident on his face. He hung his coat and walked sternly over to Leon and read it himself. "Due to the incident of Hannah Morgan's death..." he muttered, his grip on the letter tightened.
"To my office. Now," he said, going ahead. I looked at Leon anxiously and he gave me an assuring nod. I got up from my chair and followed Athens.
I entered his office. I tried to avoid his eyes so I glanced at the dark oak walls nervously. Athens always managed to maintain our late father's office everyday and kept it extremely tidy. Old, yellow-paged books were neatly organized and stored inside the mahogany bookshelves.
I stared at the carpet, still avoiding his jade eyes. I'm scared to look at him. I'm scared of hurting him.
He shuffled some things in a drawer, and pulled a purple velvet box. "It's your coming-of-age present.." He handed the box to me. I looked at the box then him. He nodded, urging me. I opened the box carefully.
There, was the most beautiful bracelet I've ever seen, well, the second most beautiful. I'll always hold the one Keith gave to me dearly.
He took it and clasped it around my wrist, and I felt a strange vibe from the bracelet. "It will limit your powers... you broke your old one, right?" he said. His voice sounded weary. He must have stayed up late making this barrier.
"I'm sorry Athens..." I apologised, feeling guilty.
He just smiled, and patted my head, "I know you'll succeed in there. I know a lot of delinquents in the union, they're surprisingly strong". I hugged him tightly, I had to.
I'll be leaving in a few days, away from them. He hugged me back, assuring me everything will be okay.
"Aww. Now break it up. Dinner's getting cold," Leon interrupted us, waving around a metal spatula. "Don't do that ever again either, all that lovey-dovey crud doesn't suit this family. "
Geez, he really had to ruin the moment. "I love you too, buttface." I said, shoving his side.
