"Come onnn Lilith! What is taking so long?" Eda was pacing at the door of the apartment she shared with her sister.
They were supposed to go on their monthly explore, but it was almost 10:30, and they should be gone already. But instead they were still at home. Because Lilith was-
Wait. What was Lilith doing?
"Liilliiiiith! Where are youuuu?" Eda called down the hallway leading to the rest of the apartment. There was a crash, a few muted swears, and eventually Lilith appeared, smiling sheepishly.
"Snacks." Lilith held up a bag that did indeed seem to have a snacks in it, as if this explained everything. It did.
"Wonderful." Eda smiled thinly. "Now can we please go?" Eda needed time away from society, so she and Lilith would go and drive somewhere where there were trees as far as the eye could see, and explore for hours. Eda loved it more than anything.
~~~
After driving for about 40 minutes, they got to the little corner of the world that only they seemed to know.
Eda got out of the car and took a deep breath and smiled. "Ah, the fresh mountain air. Ain't nothing like it in the city."
"The city doesn't have mountain air?" Lilith deadpanned. "I never would have guessed."
Eda snorted and started down the path they had worn through the underbrush. "Race you!" She called over her shoulder as she ran.
"Oh no you don't." Lilith muttered, grabbing the snacks before chasing after her.
It was a tradition they had, to race each other. There was a meadow about half a kilometer from the road. Surrounded by trees, with a few little patches of flowers around the edges, it was perfectly peaceful. They loved to come to the meadow and observe the forest around them. It was their safe place. It felt more like home than their little apartment ever could.
Eda got to the meadow first. Lilith was technically the faster of the two, but something about being in nature seemed to rejuvenate Eda. She became faster, more energetic, happier, when she was here. She loved this place with her whole heart, and it seemed to love her back.
"Ha!" Eda crowed as Lilith made her way to her usual spot in the meadow. "I win! Again!"
Lilith smiled good-naturedly at her sister as she began to unpack the snacks. "So you did, so you did. You also had a head start."
Eda flopped down next to Lilith and rested her head on her hands. "Yeah, so?"
Lilith just chuckled and handed over a sandwich. Eda accepted it gratefully, and there was quiet as they enjoyed their lunch made up of a mismatch of snacks. Once they finished, they moved to lie in the middle of the meadow for a bit.
Lilith was already lying down, arms a pillow behind her head, when Eda spotted something moving out of the corner of her eye. "Hey Lily, did you see that?"
Lilith, who's eyes had been closed, had most certainly not seen anything. "Hmm?"
"I'm gonna go see what it was."
Lilith was up in half a second. "Edalyn no-"
"Aw, why not?" Eda whined, pouting just a little.
Lilith remained unmoved. "Because, Edalyn, we don't know what it is. It could be dangerous."
Eda was shaking her head before Lilith could finish her thought. "Exactly. Which is why we should go and find out what it was."
